He found her in the courtyard. She had her head bent over a book.
Jehann grinned as he crept up behind her. He put his hands over her eyes which made her gasp.
“Guess who?”
“Sieur, do you know to whom you speak? I am the Madame Royale, I do not play games like this,” she said trying to pry away his hands.
“Even to your friends?” He whispered in her ear.
Her hands dropped from his. She turned her head to his voice.
“Is this Jehann?”
He laughed before removing his hands.
“Who else would it be?” He asked.
She dropped her book and ran into his arms. He laughed and he hugged her to him.
“Oh I’ve missed you, Jehann!” She whispered into his neck.
He laughed again. “I came back as soon as I could.”
She stepped back from him and looked around. The courtyard was empty beside the guard posted to watch her and he had his head conveniently turned the other way.
“It’s been awful here,” she said sitting down on the bench.
He plopped down beside her.
“Let me guess it was Her Majesty?” He asked.
She nodded. “She’s getting worse. I’m starting to think she’s turning my father against me and I know she has her spies in my household.”
Jehann sighed. “What is she playing at?”
“I don’t know. I’ve never been a threat to her and I’m not one know that she’s given birth to a son. I wish she’d leave me in peace. I’ve been meaning to ask my father if I can go and stay with my mother. Maybe if I were out of her sight, she’d be happier.”
Jehann took her hand. “Maybe she would, but then I wouldn’t get to see you.”
Marie squeezed his hand hard. “I’m so glad I have you, Jehann. You’ve been the greatest friend to me.”
“About that,” he started.
“Princess Marie!”
Marie stood up. Someone was coming towards them.
“Yes?” She asked the man when he got closer.
“The Queen requests your presence.”
Marie sighed. She turned to Jehann and smiled.
“I’ll see you later?” She mouthed.
He nodded.
“Lead the way, Sieur.”
