Nate grinned as he took the steps two at a time down to the den. Helen finished her SAT prep classes and could finally spend some time with him. He couldn’t wait. He walked past the mirror in the hall and stopped when he caught sight of his reflection. Nate frowned and fixed a few stray hairs.
Got to make sure my hair doesn’t look too bad. Wait, why I am doing this? It’s Helen. Nate shook his head in amusement. He walked away from the mirror to the direction of the den when the doorbell went off.
“I got it!” He yelled as he jogged over to the door. He opened it and smiled at Helen who messed with the end of her tank top. “About time you got here.”
“Please you were waiting for me.” Helen grinned as she gave him a hug. “How have you been? I’ve been so busy with SAT and stuff.”
“I’m good and so glad that’s over, but I imagine it’s a pain in the ass.” Nate shut the door and fell in step with her.
“Ugh it is, but imagine it with my mother telling you you’re going to end up lonely if you don’t do well.”
“Yikes, that’s something I don’t want to think about.”
“Me either. So, what’s the plan for today?”
“Reruns of classic shows like the The Brady Bunch, Good Times, The Office, and anything else we can find.”
“That sounds great.” Helen smiled as she walked into the den.
Nate felt an unfamiliar rush from seeing Helen’s smile. It must be because I haven’t seen her recently. He pushed the thought aside on his way to the couch.
“I got The Brady Bunch all set up.” Nate said as he took a seat.
“Sounds great.” Helen said, stretching her arms above her head.
Nate distracted himself with the DVD menu. He turned to her when she settled against the couch. “Ready?”
“Ready!”
Nate chuckled and hit the play button. They shifted on the couch during the first half of the show. Nate placed his head in Helen’s lap and she started to run her fingers through his hair. It felt good, better than when his last girlfriend did it. Nate shivered at the memory of her nails in his hair.
“What’s wrong?” Helen frowned in worry.
“No, I’m just thinking of my last girlfriend. Her nails were long, acrylic, and they hurt when they met my hair.” Nate said as Helen giggled.
“Hope my nails don’t hurt.”
“Nah they feel good.”
“Okay, if they start to hurt let me know.”
“Sure thing.”
Helen flashed him a smile before she turned back to the t.v.
There’s that feeling again. I’m sure it’ll pass soon.Nate hummed. He closed his eyes to another Marcia argument and Helen’s fingers through his hair.
Outside the door, his brother and sister turned to each other with a knowing look.
“And he says he doesn’t like her.” Vergil said.
“Please that’s like saying he doesn’t like strawberry milkshakes.” Carla said.
“He better say something soon or he’ll lose her.” Vergil said as they walked away from the door.
“I doubt it, but it would be nice to see those two together.” Carla said.
Vergil nodded on their way down the hallway.
In the den, Nate popped up and looked towards the door. “I thought I heard Carla and Vergil.”
“Oh, they’re here? I’ll have to say hi to them soon.” Helen turned to the door.
“Sure, after our rerun marathon.”
“Right, after the marathon.”
Nate grinned and settled back in her lap. Helen giggled as her fingers found a place in his hair again.
Nate turned back to the screen with a pleased hum. He finally got some time with Helen. He didn’t want anyone to interrupt it.
