Nelly feels more than sees the ring around her finger. They didn’t marry. Wouldn’t marry. Not now. Not yet. Not with the Rebels going to rise soon. But the promise is there. When all is finished. When all is calm. Soon…
Blinking her eyes once she turns her attention back to the fight. Focuses on the battle.
With a desperate cry the blade of her sword pierces the man before her. Tears are streaming down her face. She didn’t have a choice. It was him or her. If she wants to live, she’ll have to kill… But, she is no fighter. No soldier. She does not belong here. In the middle of the battlefield. Certainly not alone...
Looking around she searches. Searches for... a glimpse.
She finds him. All in the distance. Fighting five men at once. And winning... There is a small relieved smile breaking through at seeing him. He's here... His long black hair, bound together in a ponytail, flying around as he twirls, catching the light of the sun. His twin swords singing when they clash with other weapons.
Raphael...
Seeing him gives her strength. This was not how they had planned it. This was not how it was supposed to go. This was not…
She feels how Timmy pushes her aside, into a dark alley.
“Stay here. This is no place for you.”
Their eyes lock for a second. Worried gazes. Before her little brother nods once. Relieved that he managed to find her, relieved that he managed to get her safe…
He runs off again, into the direction of Rafael. Going to help.
She closes her eyes. Tired. And scared. Her knees buckle beneath her. The sword slipping out of her fingers, falling next to her.
"Don't leave me..."
They have been betrayed… The guards were waiting for them. They don’t stand a chance. She knows it. Knows that the others know it as well. And still…
She flinches when she hears another dying scream. Wraps her arms around her. Sobbing.
“Stop right there!”
Rafael takes her hand in his. Squeezes it gently.
“We need to talk to the King.”
One of the guards sneers. “Sure. You need to talk to him.”
Nelly’s eyes narrow. And she can feel the hate radiating from everyone behind her.
“We do not wish to fight. We just want the right to speak…”
A deep intake of breath, when she sees the point of the spear mere inches from her face. Cruel laughter.
“You have no rights…”
She knows Timmy will not be able to hold back much longer.
Slowly her hand pushes away the weapon. Sees the surprised looks on the faces of the guards. Feels how Rafael, still standing close next to her, tenses. Ready to react should something happen.
“The people living here do have rights. And I speak for all of them. We just want to be treat with respect and understanding. And…”
Before she can finish someone behind her yells. “And that tyrant of a King should give power back to the people. We have our rights. And we will stand up for them!”
Silence falls over the square. Shocked. Terrified. Anger. And Nelly knows all is lost now.
With a furious yell, the guards attack. And it is only because of Rafael’s quick reaction – only because he was prepared – that he manages to pull her behind him while blocking the spear that comes right at her.
Opening her eyes. Shocked.
That voice. The voice that ruined everything. She recognizes it now. She knows. Knows who betrayed them…
Narrowing her eyes she looks around. Only now realizing that there is no more noise. Silence. Complete silence.
Carefully she steps out of the alley. The square where they were fighting just some minutes ago… Empty. Completely deserted. Not even a spatter of blood on the ground to prove that there was a battle. Nothing that indicates that it wasn’t just a dream…
Rafael. Timmy.
She feels the traces of magic around her. It chills her to the bone.
Out of nowhere one of the guards appears. His spear aimed at her heart.
“Where have you been hiding that you’ve managed to escape?”
Nelly just looks at him. Silent. She will not give him the pleasure of seeing her scared.
“Whatever. Move.”
He points his weapon to the gate. Urging her forward. There is no use resisting. Everyone else is gone. She just doesn’t know if they’re gone, captured or dead.
