Carefully Caithlynn places one foot in front of the other. The snow crisping with every step. Other than that, there is no sound in the forest. And that is what worries her. Okay, it is winter. But there is always some sound. If only the wind that makes the branches move.
“This is not natural.”
She nods. Taigiri is right.
“I know. Where are Alan and Naigendra?”
Her Dragon quickly sends her an image – the other side of the forest.
“Worried?”
She hears the mirth in his voice. He’s just trying to make them get along.
“No. But I won’t deny I feel safer when they are near.”
Taigiri chuckles softly.
“Well, that is a start.”
Caithlynn rolls her eyes. She wants to laugh as well, but doesn’t when she suddenly feels – all too well – the traces of dark magic.
“Taigiri…”
Her voice is warning. With perhaps a slight touch of fear in it. She doesn’t move. Doesn’t dare moving.
“How is this possible? It’s so close all of a sudden. We should have felt it much sooner…”
She shakes her head. “I don’t know. I don’t…”
Her eyes scanning the environment. Like a hawk. And she crunches down, sets herself on one knee. Not minding the snow that soaks her trousers.
“Warn them.”
She feels how Taigiri connects with Naigendra. Alan and his Dragon must be warned. Before they as well walk straight into a trap. It is only now she notices the mist that creeps over the ground. Surrounds her. It chills her to the bone.
Silently she calls for the Wind, makes the mist disappear. It takes away the last traces of Dark Magic.
“Not a trap after all.”
Her eyes narrow. There is someone else. Somewhere near. Someone that react to – with – her Element.
“He’s not dangerous.”
Caithlynn agrees immediately. Instinctively knowing.
“I know. I can feel it.”
There is no one in her range of vision. But he is close enough to feel. Even though she should have felt him long before… And that can only mean one thing.
She stands up again. Reaches out with the Wind. Feels every tree and bush and bird it passes. Feels how it suddenly is being blocked.
There is a smile on her face when she hears her Dragon roar.
“It’s alright.”
Her voice rings through the forest and she calls the Wind back. There are traces of Water that still linger.
“Caithlynn!”
Looking behind her she sees Alan running towards her.
“What did you find?”
He’s slightly panting when he stops right next to her.
“It was indeed a trap. Set for us Wielders. But someone was here before us. Someone who managed to make the trap spring but stay safe himself. The Magic that lingered possessed no danger anymore.”
She hears the warning, even though he does not say it.
But that person might still be here.
Nodding once, she points in the other direction. “I think it was the Wielder of Water. He’s somewhere near still.”
Alan reaches out as well. Hisses when Water meets Fire.
“We won’t harm you. We’re Wielders ourselves. We can help each other.”
She lets the Wind carry her voice through the entire forest.
“Will you protect me? I’m scared…”
The voice comes from aside instead of before them. Startled they turn around. A little boy – he couldn’t be older than eight – looks up at them with big open eyes. Half hiding behind a tree. Not yet sure if he can trust them.
Surprised Alan and Caithlynn exchange a look. Both letting their Element and their Dragon reach out. Needing to check – double check – whether this boy is indeed the Wielder of the Element Water.
“You are Wielders?”
Caithlynn nods and carefully steps closer. Sees how the boy flinches and hides a little more behind the tree.
“Don’t worry. We won’t hurt you.”
Gently she lowers herself to one knee again. Her hands open in front of her. And slowly – ever so slowly and eyes keeping a careful watch on Alan – the boy walks over to her. Touching her hands.
“You control Wind.”
“Yes.”
There is a small smile on his lips when he feels the connection between their Elements.
“Show me?”
Caithlynn laughs softly when she calls forth the Wind. Sees how the kid’s eyes open wide when it playfully surrounds him. Smiles when he starts laughing when the Wind tickles his sides.
She can feel the disapproval coming from Alan. Their gifts should not be used for playtime.
But it is her way to reassure the kid.
“It’s late. And there is no more danger in the forest. How about we make camp here?”
She can see it in the kid’s eyes. He’s tired. The day has asked a lot of him.
There is a warning glittering is her own eyes when she looks at Alan.
“But. With all this snow?”
Caithlynn smiles when she hears Alan’s sigh. “Alright. Step back, both of you.”
The little one clutches her hand when they move out of the way. As if he is still scared of Alan.
His eyes open wide when he sees Alan’s Fire melting the snow to water and then makes the water vaporize.
When he touches the ground it is warm and dry. And Caithlynn can’t help but notice the small proud smile on Alan's face when he takes in the surprised and awed look the kid shoots him.
Without a word Alan starts a fire and they huddle in front of it. The kid safely hiding in Caithlynn’s arms.
“What is your name?”
“Frey.”
“You’re from the North?”
Caithlynn and Alan change another look of surprise.
“What are you doing this far away from your home?”
The kid snuggles closer before answering.
“Because I got called away. It wasn’t a voice. There never was a voice. But… There was something, someone. I don’t know. It was calling me. I think it is calling me still…”
“It’s true. I can hear his Dragon calling him.”
Frey looks up when there comes no reaction. Eyes narrowing when he sees the both of them smiling.
“You think I’m crazy. But I swear…”
Alan’s laugh makes him stop. Confused. Angry.
“You are not crazy. We too got called away.”
Surprised he looks back at Caithlynn.
“It’s the prove you are a true Wielder. Though a very young one…”
There is worry and fear in her eyes. And even though he is still young, he notices it.
“You made the trap spring?”
He nods. Proud.
“I felt it from miles on. It was easy. Though that evil one was not very pleased. He took of screeching.”
Despite his brave tone, both can feel how it scared the hell out of him. It was not his intention to spring the trap. But the power of his Element protected him.
“Frey. You like to travel with us?”
His reaction is enthusiast and energetic. As if he had been waiting for that question.
“Yes! Of course!”
Caithlynn smiles while Alan shakes his head. Amused at the spontaneous reaction.
“Good. Now, go to sleep.”
Yawning the boy snuggles once again closer in her embrace. He’s asleep within minutes.
“The Wielder of Water. Such a young kid…”
Despite his cold behavior, Caithlynn knows he is worried.
“We’ll manage. He has power. Otherwise he could never have survived the trap.”
Alan nods. “But he still needs to find his Dragon.”
She smiles. “Don’t worry. I have a pretty good feeling about that. I’m sure he’ll find his Dragon soon enough.”
There is a fond look in her eyes when she looks at the kid.
“He reminds me of my little brother.”
Sadness. So much sadness. Of course Alan catches it. But she doesn’t explain. And he doesn’t ask.

Well, Wielders discover their powers at a fairly young age. But they only get into it and find their Dragons when the war is nearly upon them... For Frey to be an actual Wielder at such a young age ... is rather unheard of. But the previous Wielder of the Element Water died and so the next one had to take over. Despite being so young still...
