Story: _____; the title of this story is Runaways.

***
At age ten, they plan to run away.
“You can work as a delivery guy,” she tells him, their fingers intertwined. They’re sprawled on the ground in his backyard, lush green grass tickling their bare arms. “I’ll be a waitress.”
“Who’s gonna hire kids?”
She shrugs. “I dunno. Kids work in sweatshops all the time, right? Why not as delivery guys and waitresses?”
“Where will we live?” he asks, still dubious.
“In an apartment. Or a box, what does it matter?” She cocks her head, resting against his shoulder. “We’d live together.”
Propping himself up on his elbows, he casts her a glance. “I want to go away. For real.”
“I know.”
“He wouldn’t be there. He couldn’t get mad at me if he wasn’t around.”
She tightens her grip. “Please.”
“And you-- he wouldn’t touch you then.”
“Please.”
Sad eyes meet hers. “I don’t think we can really go away.”
“No.” She drops his hand. “But it’s nice to think.”
That is the end of that conversation for five more years.

I kind of want to clear the slate and make everything all better for them, but I suppose that'd be boring, huh?
