The nursery was a little island of quiet in all the chaos, and Kellom was grateful for it. The army outside had breached the wall early this morning, and it was only a matter of time before...
He closed his eyes and sagged against the wall for the briefest of moments. There was always a chance he could turn the day in his favor, could break the siege, force them back, but as the minutes and hours ticked by, as they slowly, steadily advanced up the streets--
Grimly, he pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind and approached his son's cradle. The baby stirred when he picked him up, and he smiled a little, despite himself, despite all he'd hoped and striven for and lost, despite all the world and his people had expected of him. "This isn't the world I wanted to give you," he whispered.
"Baa," Sorell said, solemnly, and grabbed Kellom's nose.
"Kellom?"
He turned to face Tana.
"What are you doing here?" She sounded bewildered. At least she wasn't angry.
He made up his mind in a heartbeat, and crossed the room to her. He handed her the baby. "I want you to take him and get out of the city."
She stared at him. "What are you talking about? You'll push the stupid freak-lovers out, I'm not going anywhere."
"Please," he said, quietly. Then he lied. "I will, of course I will, but it will take time, and it will get violent, and I don't want to risk you." He bent down and kissed her softly. "It would make me easier if I knew you and he were out of danger."
"You don't need to be worried," Tana insisted. "There's no way they'll get this--"
"Humor me, please," he said, voice a little more strained than he planned. Gods know I humor you enough, darling.
She opened her mouth to argue again, but something in his face must have changed her mind. She just rolled her eyes. "Fine. I'll go get some things together. But this is a stupid waste of time, you know that."
"Of course," he lied again, and kissed her again, and watched her carry the baby--the only future he had left--away.
It was hopeless. He knew it was hopeless. All he could fight for at this point was enough time for them to get away.
He closed his eyes and imagined her hand in his again.
Goodbye.
