Notes: Guess that was all the break I needed! Also I wish you could see this chair in my head. The worst. The worst.

I.

It was plaid. Not a nice plaid, either: bright orange and yellow, some red and white mixed in. The -- and it pained Elina to use this word -- 'designer' must have intended to invoke a sunset. It reminded Elina of the time she had thrown up spaghetti.

"Tam," she said, "please tell me we're not keeping that thing."

"What? I like it."

"Oh no."

"You don't have to use it."

This wasn't worth arguing about. It wasn't. But, "Love, that is the ugliest lawn chair I have ever seen."

Tam set it in the lawn, her narrowed eyes daring.

II.

Broker laughed. "What the hells is that thing?"

Tam scowled. "What is wrong with you people? It's a chair. That's all it is. I sit in it."

Broker threw his head back. "On purpose?"

Elina grabbed the glass before Tam could, leaving only a pile of napkins for ammunition. Tam threw them anyway. Broker, strangely, was not deterred.

Tam stalked out to that chair, and Elina could only shake her head.

"So you're attracted to the crazy ones, huh?" Broker said not at all quietly.

"I had a crush on you for years, Broker."

"That's pretty much my point, Elly."

III.

"Oh," Cagri said. "That is. Hm. Is it an art piece?"

Elina groaned. "No. It's Tam's. She loves it."

Cagri raised his eyebrows. "Ironically?"

"No."

"Does she feel bad for it? Is it a rescued stray?"

Elina laughed. "She sets it out every summer."

"And sits on it?"

"And sits on it! For hours!"

"Oh dear." Cagri leaned against the porch railing. "And I thought Mitchell's couch was bad."

"Honey, his couch is bad."

Cagri grinned, his sharp teeth showing through the glamour. "Perhaps it is genetic, this love of horrendous color schemes."

Elina sighed. "And we're left to suffer."

IV.

Elina let out a hum when her bare feet hit the cool grass. She took a sip of apple wine, letting it sit in her mouth a moment before swallowing.

Tam was sitting in that chair.

"Is that my wine?"

Elina sighed. "Yes, dear."

She nearly spilled it when Tam wrapped both arms around her waist and pulled. Elina ended up in Tam's lap, both wine glasses held high.

"Tam!"

"It's very sturdy, you know." Tam took her glass, smirking over it.

"No." She situated herself so she wasn't touching it. "Don't you dare. Not on this thing."

Tam dared.

V.

Mitchell waved as he rounded the corner of the house. "Where's your third wheel? I need his help. Don't tell him I said that."

Elina shrugged. "Out shopping. You know how he... well, no you don't. He goes off alone sometimes."

"Oh. Huh." Mitchell cocked his head. "Tam? Is that Mom's chair?"

Elina felt her stomach drop. Oh. Oh.

"Nah, but it looks the same, doesn't it? I found it in some mundane tourist shop of all places."

Mitchell laughed and leaned over to inspect it. "Figures. I don't think anyone else could come up with anything so Lady-forsaken ugly."

Aw, that ending was unexpectedly sweet. All that grousing over how ugly that chair is, and then it turns out it held some nostalgia (for what it looks like, at least.) Good job.

Awwww, the ending. I guess Elina came around to the chair after all.

Aw, so Tam had a reason for liking the chair after all. Elina will probably look at it differently from now on.
