“I say we just go out. Meet them head on. We are ready. We can.”
Nelly interferes before he can say anything more. Interferes because she sees the excited glittering in her little brother’s eyes.
“Ready? We are ready? For what? To go out and meet them head on? To fight them? You say we are ready for that?”
Alex just looks at her. Nothing on his face shows how he feels because she suddenly speaks up.
“Nelly is right. We cannot. We are not nearly strong enough to fight the King’s Guard. We couldn’t possibly hope to win a battle against magicians...”
Rafael places his hand on his brother’s shoulder. Feels how he shrugs it off. Alex’ eyes flashing when he turns around to look at him.
“Alright. So now the two of you are the leaders or what? Where were you when we helped that family into hiding? Where were you when they killed Sam? Where were you when...”
He bites his lips. Shooting one more angry look at his brother. Before turning back to face Nelly.
“Where were you?”
His voice is accusingly. And involuntary she flinches.
“That’s enough Alex.”
Rafael’s voice is cold when he steps in between his brother and his girlfriend.
“Yeah sure. Protect her... Again.”
“This is not her fault Alex! You cannot blame her for our mother’s death.”
No one else in the room dares to speak. Most are holding their breath, scared to interrupt, curious to see how this is going to end.
Rafael holds up his hand when he sees his brother – three years older – open his mouth to speak again.
“Don’t. Just. Don’t. She is not to blame. And you fucking well know it. Don’t take out your anger on us. And don’t, just don’t, even think about being able to win a fight. Not against me. Not against her. Not against the King’s Guard. You won’t win...”
Alex backs off. As if he has been slapped. They can all read the pain on his face.
“I’m not betraying you Alex. You are my brother. And I love you. And I would back you up in any situation. But this...”
Rafael shakes his head.
“So, I guess we have our leaders...”
All can hear the strain in his voice when he sets himself down. His eyes avoiding Nelly and his brother. Avoiding everyone.
-
“Nelly?”
She hears his worried voice. Vaguely, in the background. The sound of the rain nearly overpowering it.
There is no need to answer. He will see her soon enough. Alone, on the balcony. Getting soaked.
“Get inside. Please. You’ll catch a cold if you stay out here. The weather is dreadful.”
As if to empathise his point, the wind starts to howl. Making the rain fall down even more furious. He turns his head away, closes his eyes, when the raindrops slash against his face.
When he looks up again, he sees she’s still standing the same. As if the rain doesn’t bother her. As if...
“Nelly?”
She shakes her head.
“He did have a point though.”
Finally she looks at him. Smiles sadly. Continues before he can protest.
“And what is more. I did not chose to be one of the leaders of this rebellion. Of this revolution. I don’t want to be. I cannot lead. I can hardly ever find the words. How could I possibly...”
Nelly takes a deep breath when she feels his fingers on her lips.
“I know. But we do need you Nelly. This could never work without you. Without your patience and your knowledge and your kindness.”
A soft laugh escapes her. A bit bitter. A bit sad. And she looks away again. Eyes once more fixed at a point on the horizon. A place he can’t see. A place he doesn’t understand.
“Nelly.”
She doesn’t react. Just stays there. Standing in the rain. Letting the world continue its flow.
It doesn’t take long before Rafael gives up and goes back inside.
“Be careful, okay.”
A small nod is all he gets. Carefully he places his arms around her shoulder. Pulls her against his chest. Just long enough so he can place a kiss on the top of her head.
“I love you.”
-
“Nelly?”
He finds her outside. Once again. He knows though she did not stay on the balcony the entire night. He has felt her crawl into the bed, snuggle close against his back, her arms around his waist, her head between his shoulder blades.
A soft gasp escapes him when he stands next to her.
“Wow.”
It makes her smile a little.
“Beautiful. This is... beautiful...”
She does not need to confirm it. Rafael does not expect a reaction. And she surprises the both of them when she steps closer to him. Placing herself just before him, letting her back rest against his chest. Her arms crossed before her body. Slowly he wraps his arms around her shoulders, his hands resting on her arms.
“How often do you come out here so early?”
He can feel her shrug in his embrace. It’s all the answer he needs.
“I never knew a sunrise could still be so beautiful...”
They both hear what he doesn’t voice.
How is it possible that such beauty still survived? We live in a cruel time. A dangerous one. Where everyone is scared. How come this has not yet been beaten?

You? At loss for sensible words? :p
And yeah, the older brother is nice. Unfortunately a little confused. I'm still wondering whether he's going to change afterwards... ^^; Not that it would matter much. He'll have forgotten about Rafael and the betrayal anyway...

As for the background ... I'm planning on writing it. One of these days. I hope... ^^;
