Summary: Nelly dreams about Rafael the night after he’s been erased

“Rafael!”
She runs to him. Smiles when he turns. Of course his lips answer her smile.
His strong arms catch her. Hold her close. Gently he lifts her up. Cradles her close, closer still, to his chest. Her arms around his neck. Her face buried against his shoulder. Silent tears escape her eyes.
“Was it a nightmare? Please Rafael. Tell me it was just a nightmare.”
It are mere whispers and for a second she doubts whether he has heard her. But then she feels how he slowly, gently, lowers her down again.
“A dream Nell. A horrible nightmare. Nothing more.”
She smiles and kisses him. Hard. Demanding. Desperate. And he answers. Needs this just as much as she does.
Only vaguely does she notices that she doesn’t recognize the place where they are. It doesn’t seem important. She’s too focused on him.
“I love you.”
She smiles. Shakes her head. As if he is playing…
“I know silly. And I love you too.”
Another hug. She misses the look in his eyes. Sad and knowing and… He knows it’s time. Already. Too soon. Way too soon…
"Goodbye Nelly."
She tenses in his arms. Feels how he tightens his hold. She had known. Had known it all along… Only in dreams does he call her Nell. Never in real life…
Something is about to happen. She knows this feeling. Knows it too well. Recently been through it already... Lost him. Is going to lose him again. Lose him all over again…
"I really love you."
Without him having to say it, she knows what follows that statement.
“I always have. And I always will…”
Her hands take a grip on his shirt. Desperate.
"You're not going Rafael. You are not going to leave me. Not again. Stay with me. Please."
His lips gently kiss her neck.
"I'll never leave you. You just won't remember..."
She shakes her head. Breaths in the smell that is so typically him.
"They can't take you away from me. They can erase you, and I will forget you. But I'll always remember you. If not now. If not in a couple of months. If only after years... I will always know you."
Carefully he steps out of her embrace. She feels too weak to even try and fight it.
The moment she lets go of him, a fence appears between them. Separates them.
It’s a wild cry that leaves her lips when she launches forward. Her hands clinging to the bars of the fence. But whatever she tries, she can’t reach him.
Keeps them apart.
“Rafael!!”
Desperate. Her arm reaches through the bars. She sees him reach back for her. Sees how he moves further and further away from the fence. Despite the fact that his feet are not moving.
“Don’t go…”
Tears are streaming down her cheeks. And she can see, no matter how far away he already is, she can see the incredible sadness in his eyes.
“I promise you Rafael. You will return…”
She is talking to thin air. But she knows he heard her still. Feels it all around her. Their bond too strong to be broken forever.

I already have part of the ending written. Where they do indeed find a way to be together again in real life.
But one of the muses - the one that doesn't like happy endings - is quite persistent to make her remember, but not really bring them together again...
