Supplies: Eraser.
Word Count: 943

Summary: Cody doesn't keep up with the world around her the way she should.
I stopped into the diner because I needed a place to go. It was literally freezing outside and I'd been walking for hours, the roads twisting and turning under my feet.
They were telling me which way to go, telling me that it was only a little further away but the roads have a skewed perceptions on distance and it's hard for me to tell when 'a little further' means a few miles or a few days away.
So, I went into the diner and I ordered myself a hot chocolate and a piece of pie. I didn't have much money but it didn't matter, I had enough and I learned a charm to make it look like I had more. I didn't want to stiff the waitress though, so I only ordered as much as I could pay for.
“There's something coming,” a man next to me says. I ignore him the ramblings of a person who I didn't trust. I didn't really care if he was crazy or not, some of my best friends were probably considered mad, but I didn't trust him, therefore I saw no reason to take his information.
“You hear me little girl,” he snaps. “Something's coming.”
I tense, my hand going down to the knife I'd traded for a few weeks ago. It wouldn't be a good idea to pull a knife out here, people don't solve their problems with weapons in the middle of a diner, but I couldn't help it. He was making em nervous and I didn't like that.
“Yeah,” I muttered, looking down at my hot chocolate. “I hear you.”
“Bet you do,” he mumbles. “Bet you do.”
I didn't know what he was talking about, I didn't care either. I just wanted to get warm and then get on the road again.
I ate my pie quickly when it came, warm apple, and I finished off the hot chocolate before paying and getting the hell out. A part of me wanted to stay, to get warmer and maybe wait out the crazy guy, but the rest of me told me that I'd be safer on the roads, that if I met questionable folks, I could deal with them my way.
So, I got on the roads, already feeling safer as my shoes hit the pavement. I was only walking for a little while after that before I knew I was being followed. Not by anyone I knew and not by the strange guy from the diner but someone new, someone different.
I tensed and prepared to run but suddenly, my limbs felt heavy and tired. I felt like I was going to pass out.
And then the darkness came, draping over me like a heavy blanket and I was out before I could think to react.
~
I wake up and it's days later, I can feel it. The cold was still in the air but it wasn't as bad as when I lost consciousness. There was something curled around me and I blinked, looking down at what seemed to be a huge fox tail curled around me. Then I moved a little more, peering around me and I realized that there was a fire going and someone watching me from the mouth of a cave.
I was deeper inside and the fox that was curled around me blinked her eyes, getting to her feet and stretching.
“What the hell,” I mumbled, looking around. I'd known the fox fae had been track9ing me, they always had, but I didn't know why and although I cared, I was too busy travelling to care.
“Welcome, little one,” the fox said. Her voice as soft and sweet, like the prettiest woman. It could have lured all kinds into that cave. It send a shiver down my spine.
“What's going on?” I demanded. “What's happened?”
“Calmn down,” she said, moving to curl around me again. “You're safe here, no harm is going to come to you while you're in our protection.”
I noticed then that she has three other tails, all of them dancing around rather than curling around anything. Great, so nto only was I stuck with foxes, I was stuck with relatively powerful ones.
“That's nice,” I said, my tone a bit more careful now that I realized she had more power than I could have ever hoped to have gained, even if I was fae, which I'm not. “So, why do I need your protection?”
“Because,” she replied, her teeth glinting in the firelight. “You're in the Summerlands now, darling., You're going to be in Faerie for a long, long time.”
I blinked. “What?”
“you heard me,” she said.
“Why?”
The person at the mouth of the cave turned and I saw that he had fox ears and three tails of his own. He moved with an animal grace that I could have never hoped to achieve. “Because, there's war going on in your world. I know you don't keep up with the world around you but we do.”
“Wsar? What? Why? Why does it even matter to you? Why am I here? What the hell is going on?”
“Hush,” he commanded, putting a finger to my lips. “Go back to sleep. You'll get all your answers soon enough.”
And I was going to protest, going to put up a fight, but I felt that heaviness drape over me all over again and soon enough, I was out.
