Rema's family owned a warehouse on the outskirts of town--one she sometimes used as a resistance way station. She was more than alarmed to get the official message from the city watch that she needed to come down there immediately.

...I haven't been exposed. There's no way. There were no identifying documents left there, I didn't have any people hidden, either.

Sure enough, when she got down there, the building was on fire. The watch, together with a collared girl Rema didn't recognize, was putting it out.

...fire-mage. Those are rare. And the few the city had were almost always on the gates--but, then again, they only ever put males on the gates, whatever their threads.

Rema schooled her face to stony concern--concern over only the correct disaster facing her--and approached the watch captain.

"Knees, freak," he said, pushing at the girl. She completely lost her balance and fell--one leg was clearly false.

Rarer and rarer.

"What happened here?"

"It has to have been arson, milady," the captain said, bending down to rearm the girl's collar. She looked up at that, a flare of impatience in onyx eyes, and Rema's heart skipped a beat.

A stroke of luck.

There were portraits--old portraits, to be sure, since there had been so little friendly contact in the last century or two--of the royal family of the City of Glass. And the Crown Princess's middle daughter was, according to Rema's intelligence, missing her leg.

Taking a gamble, Rema met the girl's eyes, and slowly raised a finger to her lip, tapping it in apparent impatience with the guard. "Arson, you said?" She didn't release the girl's gaze.

Her eyes widened, and then she ducked her head.

Perfect. I can work with this.

"The way the weather's been lately, it couldn't have been an accident. Not and spread this fast."

Rema nodded once. "Very well. I expect you to investigate this with all due diligence."

The captain bowed. "Of course, milady." Reading the dismissal in her tone, he bent forward over the girl again, fiddling with her collar. "Up, f--"

And then he was on fire.

Rema smothered a smile.

"That wasn't very bright," she said, as the captain fell back, screaming.

"You're not exactly going to do anything to me, are you," she shot back.

Brat.

Clever brat.

Rema smiled. "No. I'm not. Princess Desshiri, isn't it."

The girl's cocky facade broke a little.

"Your eyes match old family portraits. And, of course, you stand out."

She dropped her eyes. "No one else noticed."

"Few people know what to look for." Rema cocked her head. "More help will be coming soon. So here is what you're going to do."

Her head shot up again. Good. Not broken, angry at the orders.

"Burn me. I have my own cover to maintain. And it will give me an excuse to look into you. And keep you from being executed for assaulting an officer and the King's sister-in-law."

The girl choked visibly. "Wh-what--"

"I'll contact you soon, and find a way to get you out." Rema smiled at her. "Believe me. I want your uncle to come. Nothing else will fix what's broken here."

The girl bit her lip, clearly hesitant.

"You can't run," Rema said flatly. "And we're running out of time. If you want an ally at all, do it. Now."

"...I'm sorry," the girl finally choked out and Rema smelled her own smoke.

She screamed, and heard the approaching watchmen.

Perfect timing, little girl. You and I are going to work wonders.

Rema is... slightly creepy here. But Desshiri is awesome! If somewhat lacking in patience.

I really love Desshiri! And Rema is...practical. Like, beyond reason. D:
