She's half-asleep, draped over his chest, and he's curling his fingers through her hair. She thinks maybe he thinks she's asleep, because he never would have said it otherwise.

"I love you," he whispers into her hair, and it's only through an act of will that she keeps her breathing steady.

No, he doesn't. He can't. She knows what she is, and what he is, and she will not let him love her.

Not tonight. She can have tonight, can have his skin under her fingertips and his slow breathing in her ear. But tomorrow...

She has to end this.
