Word Count: 563
Rating: PG-13

Summary: A carnival after the end of the human reign of the world.
“Come one, come all,” the centaur in the top hat calls. “Come see the wonder, the magic, the rare sight indeed that is two actual humans!”
He calls to a pair of pixies passing the tent, becoming of them to come inside. One turns up her nose while the other pushes her onward.
The centaur doesn’t bat an eye, only turns to the satyr that’s crossing his path and points to him. “You!” He cries. “Why not take a tour, meet two of the last remaining humans in North America. Come on, take a look!”
The satyr, stops, considering the offer then reaches in and tosses a few coins at the centaur’s feet and walks inside.
He grins, tipping his hat to the other and starts calling out to others.
~
Darla dances in her cage, her hips moving as she claps one hand against the tamborine they’d given her. her tails and ears are under a glamour, making her looik completely human.
She winks at the satyr as he enters, blowing him a quick kiss before dancing under the lights once more. She knows that she shouldn’t be cheating people out of their money bt ti’s all she can do.
Looki9ng over at the boy, the real human, she nudges him with one bare foot.
“Cmon,” she naps. “Get up, we’ve got company.”
The boy, James, nods his head and gets to his feet, walking towards the front of the cage and peering at the satyr with wide eyes. “Hello,” he says, his voice soft.
Darla watches the satyr study both of them, then locks eyes with the boy. They whisper softly to one another and just as the satyr is about to reach through the bars and stroke the boy’s hair, Cardamom comes in, snapping his fingers.
“Can’t you read,” the centaur snaps. “No touching.”
The satyr withdraws his hand, looking embarrassed and apologetic. “I’m--Sorry,” he starts. “There’s just something about him, he..I don’t know.”
Cardamom nods, his face softening. “It happens,’ he says almost gently. “They have this way about them, they like to lure people in before they leave you blind.”
“Can they really--”
“They an do a lot of things,” Cardamom informs. “No one is entirely sure what anymore, butit’s sa9id they once could do so much that they ruled the world.”
The satyr looks dutifully impressed and then passes one glance over the two of them. Darla smiles, showing too many teeth but James just stands there, watching with wide eyes.
Then he turns and leaves, suitably impressed.
“What the fuck, Darla,” Cardamom snaps. “You were just going to let him touch the kid?”
She shrugs. “What’s the harm, we could probably use another one, then I could get back out into the crowds.”
He glares at her, clearly displeased. “We can’t have the kid spreading his disease, it’s not right. You need to get your priorities straight.”
“You mean like you,” she sneers. “You can bare3ly catch anyone’s attention. Maybe you should look into another line of work, Cardy.”
“he glares at her. “If you couldn’t get out of there already, I’d lock you in.”
She smiles sweetly. “So sweet but I’m not yours to lock away, remember?”
He only glares before sto9mring out of the room, leaving her and the human boy to entertain themselves until the next curious patron passes through.
