Summary: Laurence and Matt are called to the hospital, where Grace is
Note: Comments are more than welcome.

Laurence receives the phone call at five o’clock on the dot. The person on the other end of the line asks if he’s Grace’s guardian. With little time to think, Laurence says he is and that he’ll be right there. Matt demands to come with him; Laurence doesn’t argue when Matt pulls out the ‘We were stepsiblings’ card.

The hospital ER is full of noise and nervous energy. It reminds Laurence of a casino and it makes him uncomfortable. Matt slips a hand into Laurence’s and smiles softly. Grace, they are told, is in room one. She fainted from low blood sugar, she’s on an IV, and they’ve tried to contact her mother and father, but no one’s answered. Laurence says that he’ll take care of it; Matt says they’ll take her home.

Room one is tiny and smells of strong floor cleaner. There’s a bed, an IV stand, and a yellow chair. That’s no window; the walls are supposed to be a soothing blue, but they’re too dirty to be soothing. Grace is in the bed, her tiny frame swallowed up by the hospital sheets. Her straight black hair looks greasy and her eyes are dull; her perfect mask is falling off.

With an ‘Oh Gracie’ Matt rushes to his former stepsister’s side. Looking at them, Laurence could swear that they are actual blood siblings; they both have fair features, though Matt looks more like a surfer dude than anything else.

Knowing it has to be addressed, Laurence asks the tough question. “What happened Grace?” she looks at him and for a brief moment she looks like the eleven year old he once tutored. She looks too small and fragile to be fourteen.

“I guess I forgot to eat . . . for a little while. But, Mom has me at a hotel and the germs in hotel restrooms are . . . I couldn’t eat Mr. Mills. I couldn’t risk getting the germs on me. I just couldn’t.” Grace speaks softly, almost as if she’s not sure what she’s saying.

“It doesn’t matter.” Matt says. “We’re taking you to our house. And you know how much I clean. You can have the guest bath all to yourself, Gracie.”

From the doorway, Laurence shakes his head. “It’s not – Grace where are your parents and your siblings?”

Grace swallows, licks her lips. “Dad moved to Florida two months ago; he got remarried to his fourth wife. Mom got remarried to her seventh husband last week. She sold our penthouse, so I had to stay at the hotel.” She pauses, trying to remember where her three half-siblings have gone. “Ivy says she won’t come to the hospital anymore. She says I’m faking. Marie-Clara isn’t in the city; she went on vacation with her boyfriend. Hugh’s visiting his Dad in France.” Grace reaches out, puts her hand on top of Matt’s. “But, Matts came. You came, Matts.”

“I came, Gracie.” Matt glances toward Laurence, tears in his eyes. “She’s coming home with us, Laurence. Let me deal with Diana when she gets back from her honeymoon.”

Laurence knows he’s terribly outnumbered on this one. He also knows that Grace needs him and Matt to care for her. The rest of her family has all but disappeared on her. At least she has an ex-stepsibling and an old school teacher to take care of her.

An old saying creeps into Laurence’s head as he watches Matt hold Grace’s hand; “Sometimes we make our own family.”

Good Lord, Grace's family sucks. I'm glad she's got Matt and Laurence to look out for her, and man, I hope her family gets taken to task on this.

This is so heartbreaking and sweet. Oh, Grace and your boys. I just want to hug all of you.

I especially liked the visual of her vanishing in the hospital bed ^.^.

Oh, what an awful family. I'm glad Grace has someone like Matt to take care of her. Her own parents don't seem that interested. Like, where was she supposed to go after the hotel, anyway?

God, this poor girl, she's all alone. I'm glad she has Matt at least.
