Notes: Marie is fourteen in this piece. Jehann is seventeen. The capital is celebrating the birth of the new Prince of Norme. Henri and Anna have been married for two years when this piece takes place. The beginning lines were shamelessly stolen from a Hollywood movie and retooled to fit this because yours truly was watching this when she started to write this piece. That is all.

“This is madness,” Melania Durante said.

“No, this is Monde,” Olivie Limieux said.

It seemed all of Monde was celebrating the birth of the new prince. It was especially clear in the capital of Morelessa.

In the streets, people were drinking to the little prince’s health and it seemed for the moment that they had forgotten who the boy’s mother was.

“For my son, the new Prince of Norme, Pierre Lucas Michel du Bois!” Henri said raising his glass.

“To His Royal Highness!” The courtiers chanted.

“The Queen shall have everything she has ever asked for,” Henri said drunkenly.

But there was one person who was not celebrating.

The Princess Marie-Therese was in the Queen’s quarters. She watched as all of that woman’s ladies fawned over the newborn.

“Look at my son,” Anna cooed to the newborn. “He looks just like his father, doesn’t he?”

The women nodded in agreement.

“Marie!” Anna called shrilly to her.

“Yes, my lady?” Marie said from her spot in the corner.

“Come here,” Anna said wagging her fingers at her.

Marie sighed and went over to her. She stopped in front of her.

“Doesn’t my son look like the King?” Anna asked proudly.

Marie looked down at the tiny bundle. The baby’s face was red, but he had a shock of golden blonde hair. She supposed the little one did look like her father, but she wouldn’t tell her that.

“I believe he looks like you, my lady,” Marie said quietly.

Anna laughed loudly. “Well yes, I am his mother. Do you know what that means, little Marie?”

Marie didn’t answer. She knew what she wanted her to say, but she refused to.

“What does that mean, Infanta Marie?”

Marie looked Anna in the eye.

“It means I’m no longer my father’s heir,” Marie said.

Anna smiled. “Indeed. You may leave us now, Marie. Go and join the celebrations.”

Marie backed away. She turned on her heel and exited the apartments as quick as she could.

“I must speak to Jehann,” she said to herself. It was then that she remembered that he had left the capital for the country to visit his mother.

She walked back to her apartments dodging drunken courtiers along the way. When she reached them, she opened her door and stepped inside.

She walked into the connecting room where her writing desk was located. She sat down and pulled out a piece of parchment and a quill and began to write.

Dear Jehann,

It has been two weeks since you’ve left the capital and everything has changed. The woman has given birth to a son. Everyone is rejoicing in this silly season. I have lost my position as my father’s heir. I supposed I should have known this would happen sooner or later. But I guess I naively hoped that the woman was indeed cursed as they say and would only give birth to girl children.

I didn’t think I would miss you as much as I do. Is that weird of me to say? My mother tells me it is a virtue to always be honest, so I am. I’ve come to rely on you as I have no other. In the coming days and maybe even years I will need your guidance and your friendship.

How is your mother? You told me she had taken to her bed. Does she need any help? I could send my personal physician out to her. Just let me now and I will send him right away.

Your friend and patiently awaiting your return,
Marie-Therese, the Madame Royale

She sealed the letter with her personal seal. She stared at the envelope for awhile.

“I hope he returns to court soon. I don’t know how I’ll survive without him,” Marie said to herself. She left the letter on her desk. She would tell Adelais to send it with tomorrow’s post.

Huh, I thought Anna had only the two girls? Somehow I don't think this bodes well for the poor kid.

Poor Marie. It's bad enough how horribly Anna treats her, but to be without anyone to talk to in the court is sad.
