The ball is like every other ball she’s ever been to; crowded, stifling, and boring. They’re supposed to be exciting events, rewards, and she supposes that they were when she was young, but now as she glides around the dance floor in Ned’s too-tight arms, they’re nothing more than a burden, one more thing to be got through.

The music is suddenly over and Ned is bowing to her—she drops a belated curtsey, smiled emptily at him, hooks her hand into his elbow and startles an exclamation from him when she grips too tight. She murmurs an apology and loosens her hand, but she doesn’t really hear what she’s said, because she’s staring across the room at the woman who’s just come in.

Redheaded and regal, she wears a deep red dress shot through with gold that’s slightly out of date, although you’d never know it from her bearing. She seems arrogant, almost; certainly confident, as if everyone here means nothing and less than nothing to her, as if this entire charade is nothing more than a game. Beside her, the room fades, nothing but a whirl of candelight and colored silks.

Gina can’t stop looking at her, and longing.

LOVE IT.

You can just see Ivy in Gina's eyes and read 'OMG GET ME OUT OF HERE.'
