Notes: Armelle is the youngest daughter of the previous Duke of Cadomiselle and his first wife, Arianna Beaulieu. She has two elder sisters. Jean Michele is her younger brother by three years and the son of the Duke's second wife, Lady Lucille de la Roche. Armelle has children by her previous two husbands. She's returned to the family estate to live with her brother and his wife.

“Please brother, I beg of you, have some mercy!” The Lady Armelle begged her younger brother, the Duke of Cadomiselle.

Jean Michele ignored his sister.

“You have shamed the Everart family, sister. What would Father say if could see you know? Pregnant with a sheep herder’s bastard child,” Jean Michele spat out.

Tears ran down Armelle’s cheeks.

“He doesn’t deserve it, brother. He didn’t seduce me. He was only ever kind and gentle to me!”

Jean Michele smirked at her. “Only because he wanted to fuck you, sister.”

Armelle shook her head. “He loves me, I know he does. Please you can’t kill the father of my child!”

Jean Michele came from behind the desk. He looked at his sister coldly.

“I can and I will. I’ve gotten permission from His Majesty. We’ve tried him and he admitted to his guilt. I suggest you prepare yourself.”

With this, Jean Michele left the room. Armelle continued to cry. The door opened and Jean Michele’s nine year old daughter, Anna, came into the room.

“What is wrong?” Anna asked her crying aunt.

Armelle didn’t say anything, she just continued to cry. Anna came up to her aunt and took her hand.

“Are you okay?”

Armelle shook her head. Anna looked up at Armelle with her big wide grey eyes which made Armelle cry even harder.

“Oh Anna, I have caused a man to be sent to his maker,” Armelle sobbed.

“But why?”

“Because I dared to love him, now he will be hanged.”

Anna stared at her aunt. She put her small arms around her aunt’s waist and squeezed.

“I’m sorry. Is there anything I can do?”

Armelle bent down and looked into the little girl’s eyes.

“Never give your heart away to anyone for it will only give you trouble,” Armelle said firmly.

Anna started to say something, but Armelle interrupted her.

“Promise me, little Anna.”

“I promise,” Anna said quickly.

Armelle smiled sadly at her before breaking into tears again. Anna continued to watch her aunt cry. She had never felt so helpless before.
