"Me, obviously," Ivy said, when she got the text from her mother.
"What?" Gina leaned up and over her shoulder to read it. "Oh. You think you're the favorite child?"
"Please," Ivy said, "I know I'm the favorite child. I mean, I'm cute and funny."
Gina snorted, and settled back down on the bed. "You are funny."
"Hey," Ivy said, and poked her. "I'm cute too. And at least I was an entertaining kid."
Gina snorted again. "I don't think fireballs are the kind of entertaining most parents like."
"Buzzkill," Ivy said, put her phone down, and climbed into bed.
--
"It's probably me," Aaron said, and put his phone down.
"Wasn't that your stepmother?" Clara asked, picking up her drink.
"Well, yeah," he said, "but I'm the oldest, and everybody knows parents like the oldest kid best."
Clara, the youngest in her family, coughed out the sip of water she'd just taken. "Thanks for that."
Aaron smiled at her, and added, "Plus, when you consider that my sisters are either not very good at expressing emotion or Ivy..."
"You may have a point with that last one."
"I'm the easiest kid they have," he said, nodding. "I'm definitely the favorite."
--
Summer knew it was her.
How could it not be? Mama and Papa did so much for her. When she was upset or frightened, they were right there. When she was overwhelmed or couldn't stop crying, they were right there. They eased her along, taught her what she needed to know, and always made sure she was okay.
They loved Ivy and Aaron too, she was sure of that, but she was also sure they loved her most, because she needed them the most.
She didn’t know if that made her the favorite, but she knew it made her loved.

I like the different perspectives of this, and how sweet Summer's logic is. (I will always have a soft spot for her--she's one of the characters I'd love to try and get to know in real life.)

Yeah, Summer is I think one of my personal favorite characters ever.

I want to hug everyone involved.
