“Where is your mother?” Betrand came thundering into the room.
The children looked up from their lessons.
“Father?” His son, Betrand, came up to him.
Betrand frowned down at his eldest son.
“I asked you a question, my boy. Where is your mother?”
“I think she’s with the laundress,” Lucille said quietly.
Betrand nodded at the girl. He smiled slightly at his son before leaving the room.
He walked to the room at the back of the manor. He pushed the door open and found Marie folding up towels.
“What are you doing?” Betrand asked his wife.
Marie looked up and smiled slightly at her husband.
“I’m folding towels, my love.”
Betrand snorted. “You’re the lady of the house. You should leave that up to the laundress.”
Marie sighed. “Louise is pregnant with her fourth child. I told her to get some rest.”
Betrand was quiet for a moment. Marie continued to fold the towels.
“Did you come for something else?” Marie asked.
“Indeed I did. My brother has called us to court.”
Marie bit her bottom lip. She hesitantly looked up at her husband.
“Did he?” Marie said quietly.
“Indeed he did. Apparently the Queen has gone into seclusion for the birth of her second child. He wants you there to attend her.”
Marie sighed and stood up. “Then I suppose we should pack up and head for the palace.”
“You seem excited to leave, Marie,” Betrand observed.
Marie turned to her husband. “I’m not. But we have a duty to the King and-“
“And what duty is this?” Betrand asked harshly.
Marie put her hands on her husband’s shoulders. She kissed him gently.
“The King is no longer interested in me.”
Betrand sighed and played with a loose blonde strand of hair that had fallen from her blue hood.
“I don’t know. I see how he looks at you sometimes.”
Marie laughed. “And how does he look at me?”
“I don’t know, like he wants to have you yet again.”
“The King respects you as his brother. I have been your wife for ten years and beside I am growing old,” Marie softly.
Betrand scoffed. “You are not old. You’re just married to an old man.”
Marie burst out laughing. “You’ve just turned forty five. How is that old?”
Betrand smirked. “My back constantly hurts me.”
“Oh my love,” Marie said kissing him on the cheek.
Betrand took her in his arms.
“I’m sorry if I get jealous,” Betrand whispered in her ear. “What man wouldn’t want a woman as beautiful as you?”
Marie sighed and laid her head on his shoulder.
“I am yours and yours alone, you know that.”
Betrand kissed her neck. “As I am yours.”
Marie smiled over her husband’s shoulder.
“We should go check on the children,” Marie said softly.
Betrand nodded. “We will. Just hold me for awhile longer.”
Marie nodded and hugged her husband closer to her. The couple stayed like that until they heard their youngest calling for them.
Betrand took her arm and lead her out of the room.
