The baby had been sleeping for most of the flight from the city. Tana supposed she should be grateful for that--he was barely six months old, and it was not at all guaranteed. Particularly with all the fire and screaming and death around them.

She hadn't believed Kellom--her Kellom--had been killed. Killed by a stupid water-freak, who had taken himself along with her beloved brother and deprived her of the privilege of tearing him to pieces.

Not until they'd brought the body back and she'd seen him.

"Who's there?" A weary, guarded soldier had stopped her.

Damn it.

She wanted to tell him the truth, wanted to throw it in his face. But baby Sorell--Kellom had insisted she name him after Daddy, and she didn't care one way or another--wasn't legally Kellom's son, and even though stupid Andrell was a traitor and probably taking the crown from her Kellom's cold dead head right this moment when someone should be tearing him to pieces...

Legally, Sorell was only her son. Which meant all her big sisters and their children had to come before him.

It just wasn't fair.

So she lied, and hated herself for it.

"My name's Lera. Please let me by, I have to get to my family..."

"Who's that?" He pointed at her son. Pointed, so rudely, at the true King of Feredar.

She swallowed the bile she longed to spit at him. "My daughter's favorite doll," she lied. "It was the only thing I could grab when the house caught fire..."

"Where's your daughter now?"

"Sh-she went ahead, with my sister, I w-wanted to wait for my husband--" Convincingly, she hoped, she let her lower lip tremble.

Luckily, the soldier either lacked the patience or the knowledge or was just embarrassed by a crying woman cradling a doll like it was her baby--thank all the gods Sorell's being quiet!--and stepped aside. "Careful, some of the streets aren't safe."

She refused to thank him, just nodded, sniffling, and took off.

As she passed through a shattered part of the wall that had once protected her city and all the family she'd ever cared about, she whispered a promise to her son.

Someday, we'll be back.

Tana is a scarily good actor, even when she just wants to kill folk. I have the sneaking suspicion that she will be back and that it won't be good.

There is just so much messed up about this situation I can't even. I see Tana and Sorrell becoming a huge problem later on.

Ooh, intriguing. I can see how this might cause all kinds of trouble for Andrell later on.
