Summary: After Jax's father dies, he returns home to Georgia.
Notes and Warnings: Takes place in June 2035. Jax and Chloe are 19.
Miss Chloe found him on the front porch after the funeral service. He was sitting on the steps, staring up at the sky. It was cloudy and looked like rain. Almost balefully, he looked at the fields. The crops would be fine with a little rain, but the hay should have been brought in. It was too late now. It was a two person job, and judging from the sky, by the time it would have taken him to change into work clothes and found Noah, it'd be a useless task anyway.
"What are you looking at?" Miss Chloe asked, carefully smoothing her skirt underneath her as she sat down next to him.
"Just lookin' at the crops." Her hair was down, and the wind was starting to pick up. He smiled, almost a bit exasperated, before he turned her head to start braiding it back. He didn't have anything to tie it with, but he could braid it tight enough to stay for a bit, even in wind. "I'm not goin' back with you, Miss."
"What!" She whipped around to look wide-eyed at him so fast that he was worried he had pulled some of her hair out. "You're moving back here?" she asked in a small voice he had never heard her use before.
"Gosh no!" He gently turned her back around to start on her hair again. "My family has a tiny farm, Miss, but it still takes two people to get most everything done. And now that Pa is gone, there ain't two hands here to do it. I ain't stayin' for good, but I gotta stay long enough to get the peaches and the fields harvested, and the land sold after that. I can't leave 'til the farm's small enough for Mama to manage by herself. It's gonna be a few months at least, and that's being awful optimistic."
He could see Chloe's shoulders slump with every sentence. "I guess that makes sense... Maybe I can call Daddy and convince him to let me stay with you?"
He smiled, and shook his head. She was the nicest for offering, but Jax couldn't see Miss Chloe living on a farm for weeks. She didn't even have one good pair of shoes for it. "Oh, Miss, you know you wouldn't like stayin' down here that long. You're a city mouse, and you got family waiting for you back home. You'll be fine without me."
"You've got family in New York too, you know."
"I know I do, Miss. And I'll miss you all, you know I will. But I'm the man of my family now, and I've gotta take care of my responsibilities."
Even without seeing her face, he could see Miss Chloe's doubt. "If you say so, Starshine."
He could hear a question she wasn't asking, and decided to ask about it after a moment. "But?" he gently asked.
"But... I sort of think this might partially be about Noah."
Jax frowned, confused. "What 'bout Noah?"
"I just think that the thought of staying here with him might have affected your decision?" she hesitantly offered, which he was at least grateful for because he wasn't exactly grateful for the insinuation.
"I am stayin' here to help him. Because takin' care of the farm is a two person job, and my mother can't handle the larger animals and the fields. She can take care of the peaches and the small animals, but she can't look after the horses. They make her nervous. She certainly can't help roll the hay in."
"Couldn't you hire somebody else to help?"
"Noah's not even gettin' paid 'til after harvest and we know how much we can even pay him. We couldn't offer the same to a second person."
"Well, maybe I can pay for them to-"
"No, Miss," he gently but firmly cut her off. Miss' family had been generous enough for him, he certainly wasn't about to let them buy him out of his life on the farm. He tugged on her braid gently as he reached the end, and thunder rolled in the distance. A gust of wind sent the crops waving, and he figured they'd better get inside. "C'mon, we'll get wet out here. We can talk just as much inside."
"I don't want you to stay," she stubbornly argued as she stood and followed him inside.
The screen door banged shut behind them; he could hear his mother in the kitchen and Jax could smell that supper was almost done. He stopped Chloe to kiss her on the forehead. "To be honest, Miss, it's not your choice." Jax saw that she still looked sad when he went to go change into something more appropriate for supper, but he didn't know what to do to comfort her right now. Right now, all he could think about was the farm.
He hung his suit back up and changed into jeans and eventually decided on his moon hug shirt in hopes that it would make Miss Chloe smile.

But aww, this is really sweet. Jax is very sweet here, and being good about his responsibilities.

I love Jax. <3 Because he is so calm about having to postpone a lot of things in New York, like going to Cooper Union.
