Andrell held open the door to his private study for her.
"Thank you," she said, twisting the end of her sleeve. Probably unconscious, not trying to deliberately convey nervousness. Andrell had gotten better at telling the difference over the years. "And...thank you for agreeing to meet with me privately."
"Of course." He hesitated--he'd heard bits and pieces about her over the years. He knew who she was, and had no idea why his wife's former favorite wanted to see him. It wasn't as if she could be asking him for help with a bastard, and she and Nolani had separated years ago. "What can I do for you?" he finally asked, after showing her to a seat.
She kept twisting her sleeve. "I...maybe you're not the person to come to about this, but you're probably closest to her of anyone now, and I..."
"Yes?"
"I miss her," she finally said, staring down at her hands. "I miss her so much and I left her for all the wrong reasons and I have no idea what to say to her, and..."
It took a few seconds for what Lonura had said to sink in, and even then it was surreal beyond comprehension. Is...is my wife's ex-lover coming to me for help in winning her back? "You...what exactly do you want from me?"
"I don't even know, I just...I know your marriage isn't...not to say that you don't care for her, I just..."
And now she was crying, and Andrell was even more confused. He had no idea what to say or do in this situation. But...
...Nolani won't take a favorite without my knowing about it and at least looking the other way, if I don't outright approve. For all that Nolani had had several lovers, she'd never gone behind anyone's back--she'd always made sure one affair was over before beginning another. That at least explained why Lonura had come to him.
Besides, what Lonura had said was true--he and Nolani didn't love one another, exactly, though they worked well together and got along and...
Nolani had always been open with him about her romantic past and previous lovers. When she spoke of Lonura, there was always a little more...depth to what she said. He'd put it down to either the length of the affair or the fact that Lonura was the only lover who had left her, rather than the other way around. If rekindling things would make his wife happy...
It won't jeopardize the succession at all. And...well, the people who would take issue with my wife having a female favorite already don't like our marriage, so it won't do any further damage.
"You want her back?" he finally asked, quietly.
Lonura nodded without looking up.
...she'll be a major part of my life if I help her. If the two of us can't get along, it might upset things with Nolani, and with the treaty...
But it might make Nolani happy. And Andrell wasn't really attached to what little romance was involved in his marriage. Assuming he and Lonura were at least able to politely ignore each other...he wouldn't lose anything. And this sort of thing mattered a great deal to Nolani.
All in all, this will hardly be the stupidest risk I've ever taken. And from what I've heard about her...I don't think I'd mind sharing a part of my life with her.
He smiled a little at Lonura, and offered her his hand. "We'll go see her together. From there, it's up to her."
