The King arrived at 10.00 am for the council meeting and his councilors stood to great him. The King smiled at them. They stood as the King took his seat at the head of the table, but when they started to sit down again, the King raised his hand.
“Gentlemen, you must stand for the Queen,” Henri said motioning toward the door.
“What?!” Thomas de Caulmont said, as he watched the dark haired Analise come through the door.
The Queen, dressed in a heavy brown damask gown, came forward followed by two of her ladies.
The Queen smiled as she took a seat on the left of the King. The men stared dumbfounded at the Queen.
“Your Majesty, you know that women are not allowed on the Council,” Gilles spoke up.
Henri turned his piercing blue gaze on his brother-in-law. He stared at him for a minute before opening his mouth.
“Normal women are not allowed on the Council. Analise is the Queen and in the event I should die before my son has reached his majority, she might be regnant and she should know how to rule,” Henri said tapping his fingers on the wooden table. He turned to Analise. “Isn’t that right, my dear?”
Analise smiled. “Yes, liebhaber”
“Now to business,” Henri said picking up the papers before him.
Thomas stood up. “The Archbishop of Morelessa has been complaining about dissenting members of the Church,” he said with a pointed look at Analise.
Analise smiled at him, but didn’t say anything.
“What does the Archbishop think we can do to help?” Henri said rubbing his bearded chin.
“He asks us to outlaw the Melopist religion and drive those who do not reconvert back to the old religion out of the country.”
“I think the Archbishop forgets that both religions follow the Holy Son,” Analise said.
All the men turned to look at the Queen. She smiled graciously at them. Henri smiled.
“You are right, my dear. If only both sides could see this,” Henri said.
Thomas gave a hearty sigh. “What should we tell the Archbishop?”
Henri didn’t say anything for awhile. The Queen watched him closely.
“Tell him that for now we will allow the Melopists to continue to practice their religion in peace.”
Thomas nodded before sitting down. He looked across the table at the Queen who was looking at him. She smiled suddenly before turning her attention back to the King.
Thomas stewed in anger. The King thinks with his cock. He’s allowed this heretic to control him. For now Thomas had been beat. But he was never one to bow down and do as he was told.
