Summary: For a moment she is scared. Scared to fight. But it is a battle that can not be excaped. Yet another one that has to be fought...
Notes: The battle mentioned in ‘Embarrassment’

She yells. At the top of her lungs. Her twin daggers a comforting presence at her hips. The bow in her hand and the quiver with arrows on her back are reassuring.

Caithlynn flexes and stretches her free hand. Ready to draw an arrow at any given moment.

They run forward. Focused on the enemy before them. There is only two of them - two Wielders of the Elements - against at least twenty servants of the Shadows.

Her breath is hitching already. The fear squeezes her throat. It's as if she can't get enough air into her lungs. And it starts to burn.

"Take it easy little one."

Hearing the voice of Taigiri in her head is enough to calm her down a little. Her body still tense though. Still ready to explode in battle.

She reaches behind her, her fingers taking hold of an arrow. She nocks it while still running.

The moment she started training for combat, her mother always used to say it was as if she was born with a bow and arrow in her hand. A natural gift.

The arrow flies ahead of them when she releases it. Killing the first bandit.

She keeps on firing her arrows at great speed while she is running towards the enemy. Next to her Alan is swinging his sword. Getting a decent grip on the handle. Preparing himself in his own way.

Right before they clash, she swings her bow on her back. Taking her daggers in her hands.

She hears Alan yell when his sword clashes with the sword of the other man.

Caithlynn flinches when her daggers take a man's life. She's not used to this. She doesn't want this. For a second, no, less than a second she closes her eyes. Wanting nothing more than to call for the Wind and finish this battle quickly and without these bloody deaths... But she can’t. She can’t risk exposure…

"Damn it!"

Her shout gets lost between the battle noises. She reaches out for Taigiri. Just needing her Dragon's comforting presence beside her.

"I'm here. I'm with you. You know I am. I'm always with you."

A small smile. She bites back the sarcastic retort.

But you're not flying here next to me, are you?

She’s smart enough not to channel that emotion through their bond. Taigiri doesn’t deserve the sarcasm and … She can’t describe, can’t explain the turmoil of feelings inside. She knows it’s the fighting and the fear that drives her to this.

The fight is a furious but short one. It leaves her shivering and trembling and it feels as if her knees can buckle beneath her at any time.

Before she does collapse, she sets herself down on one knee. Her daggers pierced in the ground. They supports her, make sure she doesn’t lose her balance and falls down.

Alan is standing somewhere before her on the battlefield. Sword still in his hand. Eyes still scanning their surroundings for new enemies.

Even though they do not like each other, they depend on one other. And, through all the battles they have already fought, they know they can trust the other one, know they can rely on each other.

Like now. Trust Alan to be the one to still be tense until it is absolutely certain there is no more danger.

Taking a deep breath, Caithlynn finally allows herself to close her eyes. To let all the tension out of her body.

When she looks up again, Alan is standing before her. Looking down on her. There is a look in his eyes she can’t name. It’s not disgust, nor the thought that she is weak. For a second she thinks it is closer to compassion. But the moment that thought crosses her mind, she pushes it away again. For it is impossible.

A soft grunt escapes her when she stands up again. Their eyes still locked. He nods once when she walks passed him. A clear signal that he agrees to get on the way again. They need to be away from here as soon as possible. They both know it.

He turns on his heals when she is already walking ten paces ahead of him. Following her, yet never really approaching. They like their distance. They don’t need to be walking right next to one other. They don’t talk anyway.

Caithlynn looks behind when she hears him stumble. It's not like him to stay down on his knees. He's too proud. And stubborn. Actually, just like her.

She waits, looks at him. Wonders why he isn't getting up. Until she notices how pale he is. Thinking back to the fight they just left behind. Would he be..?

She walks back. Places a hand on his shoulder, just wanting to help, despite their differences, despite their mutual feelings of distrust and anger. She feels him shrug it off.

It doesn't really surprise her. And it shouldn't hurt the way it does. It's nothing like rejection. And still ...

He stands up. Starts walking again, leaves her standing behind. Ignoring her worried look. Ignoring her.

Of course she notices the blush on his cheeks. Embarrassed.

Caithlynn shakes her head. He really should know better by now. She'd never think of him as weak…

Wow, there is so much passing between these two unsaid. I'm thinking they feel more compassion for each other than either of them realize.

I'm glad, at least, that she can trust him. She seems like she needs somebody to trust.
