“Simon?”
The old man looks up at the mention of his name. No one has called him for years. No one has used that name for him in years…
Before him stand a girl and a boy. He narrows his eyes. They can’t be older than fifteen, perhaps sixteen. Yet there is a look in their eyes. A look he recognizes. They are indeed much older than their mere …
“How old are you?”
His voice raspy because of too little usage. He ignores the surprised looks on their faces. Eventually it is the boy that answers.
“I am fourteen. She is fifteen.”
The man nods and turns his head away. Fourteen. Fifteen. Gods, they are so much younger than we were back then…
The battles, the war, the pain, the grieve. They have aged him. He doesn’t recognize himself when he looks in the mirror. He’s only forty-five, yet people easily think him sixty or older.
Looking back at them, he finally observes them. They just stare back at him. Not scared. At all. Just … blank stares looking back at him. Not even the slightest hint of curiosity… Guarded. Shielded. Careful…
The girl… The girl looks familiar…
“What are your names.”
He lets the question hang in the air for a second before posing a second one.
“And how do you know mine?”
He hopes the girl will answer. After all, a voice tells a lot. Perhaps it will help him find out who she is. Perhaps it will tell him where he knows her from, why she looks familiar.
“Does it really matter how we know your name?”
Simon shakes his head, smiles softly. Gods, the kid reminds him of himself. But perhaps that is because they have the same task…
“No boy. It does not matter.”
He sees the kid flinch at being called ‘boy’.
“Telling me your names does. Unless you want me to keep calling you ‘boy’…”
A soft chuckles leaves the girl’s lips. It is a warm sound in this cold time of the year.
“I’m Alan. This is Cat.”
The old man’s eyes stay fixed on the girl’s face.
“Cat? Short for…?”
She nods, smiling. Ignoring her comrades’ silent protest.
“Yes. Short for Caithlynn.”
There is a strange light in her eyes when she tells him her name. And she sees his eyes widen slightly when he finally hears her voice.
“C-Caithlynn.”
She shivers when she hears her name roll of his tongue.
“Caithlynn.”
He savors the sound of her name. Sees his suspicion confirmed by the way she smiles at him. Notices the angry look at Alan’s face. He doesn’t seem to notice the deeper meaning of this conversation. And that worries him. After all, they have to work closely together. They can’t have secrets from one other. They can’t …
He sees it in both their eyes now. They are no friends…

Oh, there's a lot going on between the lines. ^^
Mainly the fact that Caithlynn is Simon's daughter. ^^

But there is a deeper connection between Simon and Caithlynn : they're father and daughter. And Simon didn't really know. Caithlynn however did, because of her mother's fairytales. And because she once asked about her heritance and lineage/origin. ^^
