Elisabeth sat on the swing playing with the doll her new stepmother had given her. Next to her, seven year old Marguerite was rocking the cherry wood swing.

“Stop that Margot, I can’t concentrate!” Elisabeth exclaimed putting her feet to the ground and holding onto the swing.

“Play with me Betha. We can act like the swing is a horse and we’re riding to the ends of Munda!” Marguerite said standing up on the swing.

“Little Margot listen to your sister, you might hurt yourself,” said Queen Analise walking into the little wooded area.

Marguerite blushed and sat down next her sister.

The Queen smiled at the girl before sitting across from them. She then reached for a book.

“What are you are you reading?” Elisabeth asked.

Analise smiled at her stepdaughter and motioned for her to come over. Elisabeth clung to her doll and walked over to her.

Analise held out the book for her.

“Oh you’re reading The Narratives of Bronde,” Elisabeth said looking at the heavy book.

Analise nodded. “Indeed my dear, I’m reading the Melopist version.”

Elisabeth’s eyes widened. “Are you…?” She trailed off.

Analise threw back her head and laughed. Elisabeth was caught off guard and stepped back. Marguerite came up behind her sister.

Analise looked at the two girls and smiled again. “Yes, I follow the teachings of Molnair.”

“But Molnair is a heretic!” Elisabeth said.

Analise shook her head. “Who says Molnair is a heretic?”

“My sister.”

“Princess Marie is a pious girl, but if she would only read the teachings of Molnair, she would see how much good he does,” Analise said.

“But he doesn’t follow the Beatua,” Elisabeth said playing with the lace at the edges of her grey gown.

“Your father doesn’t follow the Beatua anymore either, my little one.”

Elisabeth opened her mouth to say something, but she couldn’t argue with that. Her father had often made disapproving remarks about the Beatua, but he still read The Narratives.

“Molnair preaches of the rights of women,” Analise said.

“B-but…” Elisabeth stuttered.

“The Beatua loves women too,” Marguerite spoke up.

Analise smirked. “Yes he does. But Molnair preaches that every woman has just as many rights as man.”

“What kind of rights?” Elisabeth asked.

Analise smiled at her. “The right to her own lands dependent of her husband, the right to rule…”
Elisabeth’s eyes widened again. “Really?”

“Yes, my dear.”

Elisabeth looked at her sister then back to Analise.

“I would like to read more,” Elisabeth said hesitantly.

“I have many copies of The Teachings of Molnair. I will bring you one.”

“Can I have one too?” Marguerite piped up.

Analise nodded. The two sisters climbed back on the swing and soon Marguerite was chattering away about something or another. But Elisabeth was stewing on her stepmother’s words. She couldn’t wait to get a copy of that book.

Ah, that was an effective way to pique their interest.

Clever of Analise to start off with women's rights. But why do I have the feeling this will get her in trouble...
