Summary: Percival takes issue to a quote and John tries to make it better.

"it's not schizophrenia at all," He announced it to a mostly quiet room, the only sounds were of those fingers on keys.

John looked up from what he was doing,. "What now?" He studied Percival with a momentary curiosity before his head ducked back down behind his ancient laptop.

"it's not schizophrenia," he says again. "Writing is not a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia."

John made a noise but didn't say anything. Percival assumed he was waiting for him to elaborate.

"Schizophrenia is a mental illness. Writing is creativity. People may believe that being depressed or manic or some such thing creates art but that's not true at all. You're too lethargic or depressed or disorganized to manage to get anything done."

John looked u-, considering him for a moment. "It was just a quote," he points out. "I doubt it's meant to be taken literally."

"But it perpetuates something that isn't true," Percival insisted. "it makes it seem as if mental illness is linked to creativity and while there are certain studies that do show that one is somewhat tied to the other, one does not have to suffer any sort of mental illness to be creative."

John just shook his head. "That's not the point of the quote," he said.

"It may not be but that's what it seems like." He was growing annoyed. "When you're caught up in a schizophrenic break, you don't have the state of mind to sit there and create. Hypo-mania may be useful to creativity but even then, I'm not going to say that it's going to lead to creativity. Depression is just suffering, it doesn't make you a better creative person because of it. it makes life harder, it makes it a struggle. Any mental 9illness does./ It doesn't heighten your creative powers at all."

John finally move3d, getting to his feet and moving to Percival. He stood behind him and put his hands on his shoulders. "I know it's what some people think," he said, his voice soothing as he starts to work at the other man's shoulders. "But not everyone believes it, certainly not anyone who's actually creative."

"I know but=="

"But it doesn't matter." He continues. "You know it's not true, the people who suffer from the mental illness know it's not true and, I'm fairly certain that the creative people know it too."

Percival didn't say anything, just sighed and sunk into his chair. "It's just not right. It puts forth so many stereotypes and expectations on those whoa re mentally ill and those who are creative. It's not fair."

"I know," John assured him. "You have a blog you know. Why not use it for once. I'm sure your fans would be happy to hear from you."

"I'm going to get comments," he grumbled.

John rolled his eyes. "C'mon, it won't be that bad. You can write it, get it out of your system and then we'll have tea."

Percival considers this, looking between his laptop and tilting his head back so he can watch John. "Do you expect it will actually do anything?"

"Well," he started. "Anything that is countering the belief that being mentally ill makes creativity easier is a step in the right direction, isn't it?"

"I suppose so."

John smiled, moving to wrap his arms around Percival for a moment before heading back to his own laptop. "You'll feel better," he called over his shoulder. "A good rant's what you need."

That made Percival laugh and he nodded. "All right but if this receives flames, you're the one dealing with them."

"Fine,"

I empathize with Percival; I've come across a lot of creative people who think their mental illness is what gives them their creativity. It leads to just more misinformation being spread--people who won't take medication because they are afraid it will take away their creativity, for example--about a class of illnesses that's already misunderstood and under a huge cloud of stigma.

I hope Percival blogged that rant.

Man, I am so with Percival. Mental illness is not cool in any way, shape, or form, and the people who say it is don't have it.

(also, Percival, you can disable comments, you know...)

I completely understand his need to rant.
So, did he get flames and did John deal with them? :p
