Wide open eyes. Fear. He braces himself for the impact. Never, not even in his wildest dreams, has he thought it would all end like this.
Her name flashes through his mind. And for a second he wonders why. It’s only now he dares to admit to himself what exactly she means to him.
“SIMON!!!!!”
He hears the desperation in her voice. Sees it on her face.
“Sarah…”
He hasn’t told her he loved her. Has never told her. Perhaps she knew. Like so many other things she instinctively seemed to know. But he never told her. And that is one of his only regrets…
The bandit before him smiles cruelly. A sword in his hand. Ready to strike… It’s the look on his face that triggers something inside him. Something …
The energy that suddenly surges through his body scares him. It’s raw and powerful and like rolling thunder… The sky pitch black for a second. Or perhaps it is more like a hurricane. Destructive…
Magic. Forbidden. Dangerous.
But it saves his life. And hers…
“Simon…”
Shocked. Scared. They see it in each other’s eyes.
Her hand on his shoulder. He tenses under her touch, ready to run away the moment she turns against him. The moment she yells and warns the other villagers. The moment she no longer trusts him...
“Don’t worry. I won’t betray you.”
