Therese clapped along with her ladies as she watched her young daughter, Marie, dance with one of the daughters of the Ibonian ambassador.

Marie lifted her leg high before turning around. Marie preened at her mother before turning away again.

“You dance divinely, carina!” Therese shouted to be heard over the lute players.

The music continued and the women kept clapping their hands. They didn’t hear the successive knocks on the chamber door, but they definitely heard when it was kicked opened.

The music stopped as Therese stood up.

“Who dares to interrupt the Queen?” Therese said looking at the two guards. They stepped aside as Sieur Jean Luc Everart came into the room.

Therese narrowed her eyes at the man.

“Who gives you the right to burst in on us? This is a female only zone.”

Jean Luc looked down at the Queen. He had a smug look on his face and Therese sincerely wished she could slap him.

“The King has told me to collect you. He wishes to see you.”

Therese raised a red eyebrow at him. “So you’re playing a servant for the King now?”

Jean Luc turned beet red but didn’t say anything. Therese motioned to Marie to come with her. The Queen and the little princess left the room with Jean Luc following them.

Marie clung to her mother’s hand. “What is going on, mama?” She whispered.

Therese looked back at Jean Luc and she shook her head. Marie didn’t say anything else as they made their way to the throne room.

They arrived and the guards were standing there. They bowed.

“Her Majesty, Queen Therese and Her Highness, Princess Marie-Therese,” the one on the left announced. They opened the doors and Therese and Marie entered the room. Therese was shocked when she saw the scene before her.

The King was sitting in his throne, as usual, but next to him in the Queen’s throne was that tart, Anna Everart.

Therese opened her mouth to protest, but Henri held up his hand. He motioned for one of his men to speak.

Simon Le Goix stepped up. He grimaced at the Queen before pulling a piece of parchment.

“By His Majesty’s command, I hereby declare that you, Therese Isabelle Marie, Infanta of Ibonia, no longer have the right to call yourself Queen of Monde. You will surrender your room and the jewels that belong to the Queen. You will be moved to the Palace of Regretta where you will live for the remainder of your days.”

Simon finished and rolled up the parchment. He stepped back.

“You cannot do this to me. I am your lawful wife. I am Queen!” Therese said.

Henri didn’t look at her, but the tart was staring at her with those piercing grey eyes. She had that air of satiety about her. Therese wanted to bring her down a notch. She had been allowed to get too high.

Therese went on her knees before the King. He looked at her then.

“Please Henri. I have been a good wife to you; I have given you a healthy child though she is a daughter. I have been faithful to you for these past thirteen years. I have loved you. You are my world, amante.”

Henri cracked his knuckles. “You will do as I say, Therese.”

“Please Henri, I love you!” Therese shouted.

Henri looked into her dark blue eyes before he spoke. “I am sorry, Therese. I just don’t love you anymore.”

Therese grit her teeth and stood. She looked back at her daughter who was clutching herself tightly.

“I will go, but no matter what you do, I shall still be your rightful queen. You may marry this woman, but the people will never accept her as queen. The Beatua will favor me. You will have a lifelong enemy in my brother, the King of Ibonia. You will never know peace, I vow to you, Henri du Bois.”

Therese swept out of the room leaving behind little Marie. The young girl looked up at her father and the woman by his side.

“Come to me, Marie,” Henri said holding out his hands.

Marie hesitated before going to her father. When she reached him she put her hands in his and he lifted her onto his lap.

“This is Lady Anna; she will be your new mother.”

Marie looked at Anna. Anna smiled at her. But Marie didn’t return the smile. She frowned instead.

“I have but one mother,” Marie said quietly.

Henri frowned at his daughter. Marie took her hands out of his and put her head down.

The throne room was silent as Henri stewed over his thoughts and Marie sat still in her father’s lap. Things were about to change, but no one knew just how much indeed.

Ouch. Well, at least Therese has a better fate than Catherine.

I suppose it could have been worse. At least she gets another palace to live in. Poor Marie, though. She can't be expected to accept a new mother just like that!
