Since I work with Dad--he’s the Mayor now, but he couldn’t come this year--he sent me to Asendar to make Lester’s report to the Grand Duke. My appointment is later this afternoon, so I stop in a bookstore to kill time.

Oh, wow. Talk about your unpleasant surprises. I can hope he gets his comeuppance (the murderer, not Selmid), but that last line is not promising.
