Cosette was lying in a field of red roses, she had her woven basket next to her, but she had only picked a handful of the roses before she dropped the basket and fallen into the flowers. She was careful though since she was carrying the King’s child.
“What are you going to be, little one?” Cosette said to her belly. She was showing only a little, but the King was so happy. He often rubbed her belly at night and when she woke his hand would be on the little mound.
“Your Majesty?” came a light female voice above her. Cosette looked up to see her step-daughter standing over her.
She sat up and patted the ground next to her, Elisabeth flumped down beside her.
“Is there something bothering you, Elisabeth?” Cosette said picking up a rose and putting it in the girl’s hair.
Elisabeth was quiet for a moment. Cosette watched as she worriedly bit her lip. Maybe the princess had been spending too much time around her as she seemed to have picked up her habits.
“I’m worried about Papa,” Elisabeth finally said.
“What is it?”
“He’s declared war on Alesa.”
A loud rushing sound came in Cosette’s ears. Clearly she had misheard the girl.
“What did you say, Elisabeth?”
Elisabeth stared at her step-mother. Cosette felt as though the girl’s clear grey eyes were staring into her soul.
“Father has declared war on Alesa,” Elisabeth repeated.
Cosette grabbed Elisabeth’s shoulders roughly and turned the girl to face her.
“When was this announced?”
“This morning during the King’s Council,” Elisabeth said alarmed at her step-mother’s behavior.
“But why are you telling me, Elisabeth? The King should have told me. Why have I not heard and how do you know this?”
“Emeri told me. Father let him sit in the council chambers this morning.”
Cosette stood up. She brushed the rose petals off of her. Elisabeth shot up as well.
Cosette started back toward the palace with Elisabeth walking behind her.

“Congratulations on the upcoming child, Your Majesty,” said Gabriel de Faucon.
“Don’t congratulate me yet. It might be a girl,” Henri said laughing.
The other men laughed.
The room was silent until they heard a young woman’s voice talking.
“You shouldn’t rush in…” the girl’s voice said.
“Is that Princess Elisabeth?” Gabriel asked standing up.
Before anyone could answer the doors open and the Queen entered. She had a blood red gown with black lace at the neck and sleeves. A tiny ruby jewel glittered at her neck. She looked beautiful, but she had a worried look on her face.
“Henri, you have declared war?” Cosette said walking towards the King.
Henri looked taken aback at first, but he quickly caught himself.
“Yes wife, I have.”
“Why wasn’t I told?” Cosette said placing her hands on the King’s shoulder.
Henri smiled slightly. “I didn’t want to upset you. I know you are opposed to war.”
Cosette sighed. “Henri, I am your wife. I am Queen. I must know things like this.”
Henri pulled her to him. “I will take your feelings into consideration. I am sorry if I worried you.”
Cosette sighed and laid her head on his chest.
It was then that Cosette realized something. I love him. I’ve fallen in love with my lord husband.
She didn’t know how to feel about this new revelation. She couldn’t be in love with Henri. It was too dangerous as his previous wives knew only too well. And what of her love for Gilles?
Was it possible to love both?
“You’re quiet,” Henri whispered into her hair.
“I was just thinking,” Cosette said. She heard a cough and then she realized that the King hadn’t be alone.
Cosette turned and saw at least four men looking at her. The Princess Elisabeth was standing behind them.
“Did I interrupt anything?” Cosette said stepping back from the King. He let her go.
“Nothing important, my dear.”
Cosette smoothed out the tiny wrinkles in her gown before facing the men.
“As you were gentlemen,” Cosette said walking past them. “Elisabeth, let us leave the men to their business.”
Elisabeth nodded and followed Cosette out of the room.
Once the doors had closed, Cosette let out a gust of air.
“What must they think?” She said to Elisabeth.
Elisabeth patted her on the arm. “Don’t worry, my lady. I’m sure they have other things to be worried about.”
Cosette nodded before standing up straight. She started walking down the hall with Elisabeth at her back.
This war will take him from me. Her hand with to her belly, she hoped for the sake of her unborn child that Henri would make it through this war. And for my sake as well.
