She wasn’t sleeping at night.
Every night without fail after she and Henri had made love, Jeanne would cuddle into his shoulder, but sleep would not come to her.
Henri didn’t seem to notice as she yawned next to him on her throne. It was on one of these days that the Queen overheard her ladies whispering behind her.
“I wonder how long she’ll last?” One asked.
Suddenly she was alert. She turned slightly to hear them better.
“I give her three years tops. The King seems to lose interest fast and then if she can’t produce the male heir maybe she’ll go the way of her predecessor.”
One of the women laughed at that.
“There’s nothing to do but wait,” The first voice said.
Jeanne clenched her teeth. How could that talk about her like that?
Her brother bowed before Henri and Jeanne. She tried to focus on him, but she found her eyes were clouded with angry tears.
“You may rise,” Henri said to Thomas. Her brother rose and then looked at her pointedly. Jeanne avoided his eyes.
“The Queen has spoken highly of you, Thomas. I’m awarding you a spot on the King’s Council,” Henri said picking up Jeanne’s hand and placing a kiss on it. She smiled slightly at him and then put her head down.
“Your Majesty flatters me beyond belief,” Thomas said bowing again.
The two men smiled at each other. Jeanne frowned.
It seems like the men in my life are using me to their advantage. She thought to herself.
Jeanne sat up and ran her hands down her sapphire blue gown. She bit her lips. I will use them to my advantage as well.
