Summary: Setsiana wonders about the dream.
Today was another day when Setsiana had slept in later than usual. She’d been noticing that this often coincided with dreams that she suspected might actually be Qhoroali’s. It made some sense; Qhoroali slept later, and was presumably dreaming later into the morning. She was still in the kitchen for breakfast first, but Qhoroali joined her not too long afterwards.
Qhoroali did not seem inclined to conversation this morning, and had her attention focused on the food. Setsiana watched her surreptitiously as she broke off pieces of sándrev. She’d made a very specific request in the dream. Would she get a response? If she didn’t, did that mean that it hadn’t really been a shared dream? Or, it could also mean that Qhoroali didn’t remember it, or that she didn’t believe what Setsiana had told her about it.
They ate; the silence stretched on. Maybe dream communication was not an effective way to get through to Qhoroali, if she didn’t remember it, or didn’t accept it as real. But when she’d had that first shared dream, about her papers that Qhoroali had copied, that had influenced Qhoroali to repeat the same conversation in real life as they’d had in the dream, even though Qhoroali had seemed not to clearly remember the dream itself. Maybe, even if Setsiana could not communicate with her in a general way through dreams, she could still influence her waking actions that way.
She was almost done with her breakfast by the time she finally spoke up. “I had a strange dream last night,” she said, “about something that happened a long time ago.” Technically not untrue, since she guessed the dream must have been about some real event from that part of Qhoroali’s life; she doubted Qhoroali would have come up with that dream plot on her own.
“Ahh,” said Qhoroali, noncommittally, and then hesitated for a moment, seeming to consider something. “I guess I did, too,” she added, but did not elaborate, and instead finished off the last of her sándrev and left the kitchen.
Setsiana closed her eyes and just breathed for minute, quelling her frustration. Maybe Qhoroali had dreamed that dream with her, after all, and just didn’t want to talk about it. It did seem like the kind of dream she might not want to talk about, after their recent conversation, and it was probably normally about someone Setsiana didn’t know. Waiting for a more favorable dream to come along by chance didn’t appeal to her, but maybe there was some merit in the idea of using a dream to influence Qhoroali’s actions. Setsiana could often direct her own dreams to go where she would wanted them to. These shared dreams put up more resistance, but she’d successfully changed the direction of the one last night. Maybe she could do more with that.
