"You promised me." Tana said, outraged.

Kellom closed his eyes and counted to ten. "I know."

"You promised!"

She'd somehow managed to locate one of her shoes next to the bed, and Kellom just barely ducked out of the way in time. "Tana--"

"Even when we had to come up with all kinds of lies and find secret places so Daddy wouldn't find out, you promised me you wouldn't!"

"Do you really want Mellir to become king?"

"No, of course not, he's an idiot--"

"Then I have to have a child. And, darling, you can't be the mother. So I have to marry."

Tana stared at him. "You promised me, Kellom. You promised it would be just us, for the rest of forever."

And what a gods-damned stupid promise that had been. He'd meant it at the time, and regretted it right away. "It isn't that I don't love you--" She found the other shoe. This one he had less luck dodging. "Dammit, Tana!"

"You promised me you'd never marry again after the bitch died!"

"And if Andrell were older than Mellir I'd have no problem keeping that promise," Kellom said, taking her wrists, mostly to keep her from throwing anything else. Gods help them all if she got hold of the dagger under his pillow. "But I can't let Mellir become king after me, you know that."

Tana glared right into his eyes. "I hate you."

"It's only so I can have a better heir than Mellir," Kellom tried again. "It doesn't change anything between us."

"Now you're being an idiot," Tana snapped, jerking her hands back and climbing out of the bed. "Unless you plan on getting rid of her once you have your precious heir."

There was no use trying to talk her around until she calmed. Kellom tried to catch her hand again. "She won't get between us--"

"Let go of me."

He stopped. "If you're leaving, at least get dressed."

She stared at him. "And if I don't?"

"Then everyone in the palace will find out about us and no one will listen to me. The Purge won't happen."

She pouted, but snatched up her dress. "I still hate you."

And you'll still sneak in here tonight, after Mother goes to bed, no matter how much you want to hate me right now. "I love you."

She tore the dress pulling it on, then stalked out of the room.

I'm a little surprised that no one's suggested killing Mellir yet, given how sociopathic these two are... and also, I love this AU. I realize that makes me sick and twisted, but I do.

Like [personal profile] bookblather, I'm just waiting for one of them to hit on the idea of arranging an "accident" for Mellir.

I really like this AU. This family is already so messed up, why not take it even further?
