Light Black #30 [The Fulcrum]
Name: A New Substance
Story: The Fulcrum
Colors: Light Black #30: Stop
Styles and Supplies: Stain ("If we don't change direction soon, we'll end up where we're going." - Professor Irwin Corey)
Word Count: 489
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Characters: Setsiana, Qhoroali
In-Universe Date: 1912.5.2.1
Summary: Qhoroali makes a new discovery.
During the following week, Setsiana spent more and more of her time trying to engage Qhoroali in really thinking about what it would mean to kill Sapfita and destroy numerous timelines in the process. They argued about moral philosophy and theories of existence and non-existence, and life and death.
These were not topics that Qhoroali had spent much time researching, and she would frequently send Liselye in search of new papers, either to argue some point to Setsiana, or to contradict something Setsiana had said to her, or sometimes just to read something that Setsiana had referenced. Setsiana came to understand that although Qhoroali may have spent more time researching Sapfita than she had, Setsiana had actually spent significantly more time as a junior priestess learning the foundations of other topics. But no point Setsiana made seemed to dissuade Qhoroali from her goal.
One day, Qhoroali picked a book off the top of the stack that Liselye had come in with that morning and flipped it open to the paper she wanted to make a copy of that day, and a loose sheet fell out of it. It wafted down to the surface of the desk, and Qhoroali set the book aside to retrieve it. She held it in front of her for some minutes, squinting in confusion.
“Have you ever heard of something called Nyecchea?” she asked.
“No.” Setsiana came over to the desk to peer at the paper with her. “What is it?”
“No idea. But I’d love to find out.”
From behind Qhoroali, Setsiana read what was written on the paper, in very large QuCheanya characters, underlined several times: Do NOT bring Nyecchea into the temple. It INTERFERES with Mirror usage!
Qhoroali put the paper down on the desk and turned to look at Setsiana. Her lips had an intrigued twist to them. “How do you suppose this stuff interferes with the Mirrors?” she wondered aloud. “Maybe it has some effect on Time itself?” She flipped the book that the paper had fallen out of back to its front cover. “This one’s from the 22nd century. Whatever this stuff is, Cusäfä should know about it… unless his government censored information about it, I guess. We’ll have to make time for another visit out there.”
Setsiana looked down at the paper on the desk. Was this the answer, then? Was this going to be the substance Qhoroali had been looking for that would allow her to destroy Sapfita? She felt she was no closer to convincing Qhoroali her plan was bad than she had been earlier, and yet Qhoroali seemed to always be making new progress.
She needed a different tactic. Maybe the waking world was not the best way to get through to her, after all. Would it be easier to reason with her in the shared dreams they seemed to be having? She would have to do an experiment the next time she had one.
