Gathering 16

On the third day of the Sea Festival, at around the same time as the races around the Calla Strait were starting, Leion heard a sharp rapping at the door. Caught in the middle of fastening his shirt and halfway down the narrow and crooked staircase, he halted, then leapt down the last few steps and hurried along the darkened hallway to the front entrance, where he drew back the bolt as swiftly as possible and finally tugged the door open.

The woman standing outside in city livery held out the paper to him with disinterest and waited while he read it. "Any answer?"

"No, thank you," said Leion. He fished around in his pockets and then handed over a starflower coin. As soon as she'd gone, he scanned the note again, slumped sidelong against the wall, a slow smile growing across his face. Ivina Gerro had written to let him know he could see Viyony at the hospital if he wanted.

Leion barely paused to give his office anything more than a hasty glance to be sure that everything was in order, then grabbed his keys and tore out of the door, heading towards the upper area of Portcallan.

Viyony was lying in a bed in a tiny individual room at the back of the Vionnic hospital. It was north-facing, with a window open but covered by a light, net-like curtain.

Ivina, standing in the doorway next to Leion, placed a warning hand on his shoulder before he could move. "Five minutes only," she murmured in his ear. "The medics weren't happy, but she asked for you several times, so I insisted."

"Five minutes," Leion agreed. He remained outwardly calm, while his heart thumped away quite madly in his chest. Viyony didn't look well by any definition of the word, but she was alive, no longer blue-tinged, and alert enough to watch him as he crossed the room.

He sat down on the stiff wooden chair next to the bed. "Hello, trouble."

Viyony turned her head on the pillows and one corner of her mouth lifted in what probably counted as a smile.

"Yes, it's me," he said, trying to keep his tone light. "Naturally, you're delighted I'm here; I understand." He leaned forward and took her hand. "I'm very glad to see you, too. How are you?"

She gestured to her throat, and said, only just audibly, "Not supposed to talk."

"Oh," he said. "I see. No problem. I can talk for two, if needs be. Right then, before I get kicked out, the important things—Tana has Eollan safely under lock and key. So there's that." He hesitated and then squeezed her fingers gently; they were hot to the touch. "And the other evening—I never meant to turn you down. I ran after you, but I couldn't find you. I'd wish I'd bitten my tongue out. I'm so sorry."

Viyony screwed up her face. "I know," she whispered. "You were there, though, weren't you—at that place? I didn't dream it?"

"You know you never dream of me," said Leion. "Tragically. Yes, I was at the Zillence house that night. I only wish I'd got there earlier."

She closed her eyes, but squeezed his hand in return. Thank you, she mouthed.

"Don't you dare start being nice now," said Leion. He swallowed. "I mean it. You've nothing to thank me for." He bent down to kiss her hand before he released her. "Just keep resting—do as the medics tell you—get well. I'll see you again as soon as they let me."

Viyony nodded.

Leion rose and crossed to the door as quietly as he could. When he turned back, she was still watching him. He raised his hand to her, somewhere between a wave farewell and a salute, and left.

Oh thank all the powers!

(BTW, I hope Leion finished fastening his shirt before either opening the door, or failing that, leaving the building! Don't want to be frightening the horses!! 😜)

Glad that she's recovering, and that she remembers what happened somewhat, although it sounds like she might not have a super detailed account of what actually happened with Eollan and etc. Kind of curious about what she has to say about Tess later, though.

I guess she is just not allowed to talk because she spend the whole night speaking prophesies nonstop and they want to give her voice a break?
