Opal Jasper #6
Name: shadowsong26
Story: You Didn't Have to Do That
'Verse: Feredar
Colors: Opal Jasper #6. thunder and lightning
Supplies and Materials: graffiti (Lilith Faire Day Seven: Second Stage), diptych, life drawing, eraser (Unthreaded AU), chalk (magnetic constant)
Word Count: 380
Rating: PG
Characters: Taz, Kes.
Warnings: Schoolyard fistfighting/bullying; discussion of/reference to Islander internal prejudices.
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always. I've previously written in this AU here.
"You didn't have to do that," Kes said.
Taz had a black eye, bruised knuckles, and absolutely no regrets. "'Course I did. She was mean to you, she needed to get punched." She paused. "And I didn't shock her. I'm gettin' better at the static when I'm mad."
"She wouldn't've hit you back if you'd shocked her," Kes promised. "But...she's your friend."
Taz was Unthreaded, too, which made it hard to make friends. She definitely didn't have as many as she deserved, and she liked people and being around people, and Kes didn't want her sister to lose that, just for her.
Taz shook her head firmly. "Not anymore. I don't want friends who are mean to my sister. We look out for each other, right? There's nothin' more important than that."
Kes nodded, and hugged her sister tight. She didn't say 'thank you,' 'cause Taz was right and this was just what they did for each other.
But she thought it real hard, and she was pretty sure Taz knew how grateful she was.
"You didn't have to do that," Taz said.
The two of them were sitting in one of her favorite spots, watching a storm build itself on the horizon. Not one she'd made; she didn't know enough to touch that kind of energy at this distance. And she wouldn't take lessons from one of the navigators, 'cause they'd just want her to be like them, and not the sailor she dreamed of being.
"'Course I did," Kes said. "He wouldn't take you."
"Kes, you could--you could've been on a ship for a year now, buildin' a reputation and a life for yourself," she said. "You don't need to wait for me."
She shook her head. "Maybe I don't need to, but I also won't sail under a Captain who won't treat you right. We look out for each other, yeah? There's nothin' more important than that."
"...yeah," Taz said, and leaned her head against her sister's, feeling some of the tension bleeding out of her shoulders. Whatever else happened in her life, she would always have Kes in her corner, just like Kes would always have her.
She didn't say thank you, not in words, but she was pretty sure Kes knew she meant it anyway.

Yep, the two of them are super close, and that's pretty consistent in every AU. Even if there's a period where they're not talking (mostly because they didn't resolve a fight properly and each of them wanted to give the other space/wait for her to make the first move and it just) if one of them needed the other she'd be Right There.

Yeah. Honestly even when they have their One Big Fight the only reason it lasts more than a few days is because each of them wanted to give the other space and so they were waiting for her to make the first move...not helped by the fact that Taz moved half a world away, but yeah, once one of them does reach out they're immediately back to their old closeness, physical distance be damned.
