he didn't know when things had changed, but somewhere along the line, he had found...

not peace. not exactly. the guilt and the grief were still there, and they always would be--how could they not, with everything he had seen and done?

but now, sitting here, alone with his mind--his mind, fully his, as intact as it ever was, past the force of everything rushing back...

he realized he was--he could do this. he had made it this far. somehow. and the oblivion he had craved and begged michaela to grant him in the beginning, it wasn't helping anymore.

he didn't want it anymore.

the guilt and the grief weighed on him, of course, as they always would, but they were his.

whatever years or centuries were left to him, whatever purpose michaela still wanted him to play, he wanted to see it. to know it. with his own mind.

he'd spent enough time crawling out of the darkness. he was ready, perhaps, to start crawling back into the light.
