Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always.
Alex had wanted the two of them to write their own vows, which--sure, okay. Shane understood the logic behind it, and it had meant a lot to her partner, so she'd agreed.
But, of course, here she was, the night before her wedding, her dress in its garment bag hanging in mute reproach on the door, with a glass of wine and a stubbornly blank piece of paper in front of her.
She'd done some research, of course, but had mostly only found advice on what not to do--it's okay to be funny but don't load it up with too many inside jokes; don't be too raunchy; don't go on for pages and pages. Basic common-sense principles.
It wasn't particularly helpful.
Well. Here she was, and if she didn't want to go into her wedding with nothing to say to her beloved, then she had to get something down. Ideally something at least a little bit moving. No pressure.
Just. Get something down. You can edit it later. With Zia in the morning when she's doing your hair, if nothing else. She thanked every deity in the known world for that particular cousin, she couldn't have pulled this wedding off without her.
With that safety net in mind--and maybe some help from the wine--the blank page didn't seem quite so daunting.
'Alex,' she began. 'I'm not always good at putting these things into words, but I'll do my best because standing here with you today means the world to me. I love you. I love the way your face crinkles a little bit when you smile. I love the way you hum a little bit off-key when you're doing the dishes. I love the way it feels to have you next to me when I fall asleep, or to kiss you when I get home from work. Or even just holding your hand when we're out, which, you know me, that's about the extent of PDA that I usually like. But mostly I think I love how patient you are with me, when I can't just say how you make me feel. So, thank you for hearing what I can't always seem to say. I love you, and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you.'
...well, she'd have Zia look it over in the morning, anyway. But she had something to say, at least. Something true.
Even if it wasn't as beautiful as what Alex was bound to write, Shane thought it might be just good enough.
