Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always.
Idan sat at his desk, staring at the two letters, still unsealed, that he'd just finished drafting. An attempt to explain himself before leaving.
It might be better, for Larien and for Malue, to know why he wasn't coming back. To know why he was cutting ties before either of them became a King and started trying to use him against the other in earnest.
That was why he'd written them. Because he did love them both, and he didn't want to hurt them more than he had to.
On the other hand, neither of them would respect his feelings that way. And maybe that wasn't fair, because being a King did generally mean that a brother--or a cousin--and his heartstrings came in a distant second to so many other things.
Of course, that assumed that his explanation made things better. That accusing them of using him, of wanting to use him, would hurt any less than just a quiet absence.
No. Better to make as clean a break of it as he could. No matter how cruel.
One after the other, he tore the letters into pieces and tossed them on the fire, and felt suddenly lighter. Unencumbered. Like he could move and turn and breathe as he chose, and not scrambling for the narrow space between his love for his brother, and his cousin, and his home.
His soon-to-be former home.
It would be fine. They would all be fine, without him.
And he would be free.

Yeah, Idan leaving does have repercussions later, both personally and politically. More obviously in Elanhe, but it ripples outward.
