It's a strange thing, what the four of them have. And it is the four of them; even if each tie that binds them, one to another, is a slightly different color.
It began as something much more simple--a political marriage between a couple who could become friends, and the mistresses who held their hearts. But with time, the web they wove among themselves took shape.
When Nolani had her third miscarriage, she asked for Tova. Because Tova knew--Lonura had never wanted children of her own body, and Andrell's older sisters were close to Nolani's mother's age, and Tova was her friend.
When Lonura felt unsure in a foreign court that was less familiar with a Queen's favorite of any gender, Tova stepped in to guide her through; when Tova was overwhelmed with being so close to the center of focus of the court, and what it might mean for her and her daughter, Lonura stood beside her to help her cope.
When Andrell dreamed of his brothers' bodies, he would get up, slip out of whichever bed he was in, and spend the rest of the night pacing in his study, searching for some distraction. It took him years to realize that the three of them all knew, and they knew him well enough to know which of them should go sit with him until he settled.
And on and on, around and around in circles, the web more dense with every passing day; all the little ways they show up for one another until none of them could quite imagine life without all three of the others in it, providing support and a safe harbor from the stresses of their lives.
It's a strange thing, this web that binds the four of them together, in all its different colors. And it is also the best thing that ever happened to them.
