It's easy to deny her guilt. Easy to say--this is her nature; this was necessary; if the stupid human girl hadn't stepped in where she didn't belong, none of this would have happened.

While all of that is true, when weighed against the scent of (her) Mariko's burning flesh, the sound of her screams, the fear and horror reflected in her eyes, it becomes immaterial.

What Lux did may have been in her nature, and may have been necessary, and may have been avoided if Mariko had simply stayed away, but it is still something she did.

No, more than that. Something she committed.

A sin.

A crime.

And now she will have to live with what she's done--no matter how justified. And with the fact that there is no coming back from here. Even if she wasted their time on apologies and explanations, Mariko will not--cannot--forgive her this.

The knowledge tastes bitter as smoke as she flies away from the CSP station, leaving the delicate human girl she'd so carelessly ruined behind.
