Ecru #9 [The Fulcrum]
Name: The Timeline You Want to Live In
Story: The Fulcrum
Colors: Ecru #9: Prefer
Styles and Supplies: Novelty Bead ("moral of the story", given here)
Word Count: 389
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Characters: Setsiana, Sapfita
In-Universe Date: Night of 1912.1.1.1
Summary: Setsiana has a dream before she returns.
The night before Setsiana returned to 1647, she dreamed of Sapfita again. They sat facing each other, as if at a table, and Sapfita took her hands and leaned forwards, as if to tell her some secret, or some very important advice. “Tomorrow,” she said, “I want you to be very sure that you do what you do because you think it is the right thing to do, and not because it’s what you think someone else wants you to do. Do you understand?”
“What do you want me to do, specifically?” Setsiana asked.
“I want you to do what you think is right. Remember that who you are is the sum of the experiences you have had and the decisions you’ve made, in the personal timeline you have lived in up to this point. There is something I need you to do tomorrow, but you will do it in some timelines without any specific prompting. What I need to be sure of is that the versions of you who do that thing are the right ones, the ones that are truly committed to that course of action. This is a moment where you will choose with your actions which timeline you will to live in, for the rest of your life. Be sure that it is not a choice you will come to regret. You tend to overvalue the impressions that other people have of your actions — tomorrow, I ask you to set that aside, and choose your course of action and the trajectory of your life for yourself, and not for them.”
“What is going to happen tomorrow?” Setsiana asked. “I am going home, right? Back to 1647?”
“Yes. Qhoroali will not take that back, for her part. And I need you to always remember that I love you, no matter what happens tomorrow. Even if we are separated forever after your choice there, remember that I will always be here, loving you from a distance. You will need that knowledge in that case, I think.”
All too soon, Setsiana felt the dream dissolve around her. She tried to struggle back to it, to ask what Sapfita had meant, to ask which choice would cut her off from future dreams, but it slipped away from her like a leaf caught in the strong current of a river.
