Summary: Priestess Fyäccheira reviews Setsiana's paper.
(Pretend the diacritic is there in the cut text, Dreamwidth didn't like it and replaced it with a question mark.)
Somewhat out of breath, Setsiana arrived at the end of the main west wing hallway and opened the door to Priestess Fyäccheira’s office. She was the only one in this hallway at the moment, in contrast to the small crowd of juniors who had just left Priestess Meqhola’s class in the east wing. The west wing frequently had very little traffic, and it always made her feel like she was trespassing.
The inside of the office had an even more hostile atmosphere than the hall. Priestess Fyäccheira sat behind her desk, looking distinctly impatient. The junior who served as her personal aide was not present currently, so it was just the two of them there. All the better if Priestess Fyäccheira was going to deliver criticisms, Setsiana thought to herself.
“You’re late,” said Priestess Fyäccheira, just as expected, and sighed deeply. “The chime was minutes ago.”
“I apologize,” Setsiana said resolutely. Best not to mention Priestess Meqhola, lest she be accused of blaming her. She took the stapled clean copy of her paper out of her bag and set it on the desk for inspection.
Priestess Fyäccheira spent several minutes leafing through it in silence, writing the occasional note on it with one of the self-inking pens. Setsiana waited in anticipation. At length, Priestess Fyäccheira flipped it back to the first page and began her official review.
“It’s improved from last time, I’ll say that much. But you are still missing some critical sources - you can’t hope to do this kind of review properly without a mention of Toacea 823 or Chyoise 1164, and I would probably mention Päromä 930 in your section on Sapfita’s history, as well. You’ve clearly read Toacea, the concepts are here, but there is no citation. Where is the citation?” Her voice rose as she underlined some note that she had written several times. “Also, you need to read more on dream theory, that whole section is very lacking. I recommend starting with Lyafeano 517 and Yoache 460, I will write the references here.” She made more notes. “Haven’t I mentioned this before? Sometimes it feels like talking to a brick wall, with you.”
Setsiana stood still and simply nodded, refusing to react to the criticism. Priestess Fyäccheira wouldn’t listen to explanations and didn’t care about anything that had happened yesterday. Every time she submitted a paper for review, she had completely new criticisms - she was sure that she had never heard Priestess Fyäccheira mention Chyoise or Päromä before today, for example. But she had to admit that Priestess Fyäccheira had mentioned Lyafeano and Yoache and dream theory; that criticism at least was merited, and Setsiana should have done that reading. For personal reasons, Setsiana was finding it hard to start in on that particular branch of research, and recent events certainly were not making it easier.
Fortunately, Priestess Fyäccheira seemed to have no more major criticisms left this time. She flipped through the paper, and made a few comments about minor stylistic issues, and then seemed to run out of steam, handing the marked-up paper back. “I will see you back here with a hopefully better copy in a month, although my hope for this is dwindling. You are done with schoolteaching now, yes? So you’ll have plenty of time.”
Setsiana did not bother to contradict the last assumption as she had done earlier with Syeraila, and simply took her paper back mutely with another nod. Priestess Fyäccheira seemed to take most of the things she said in these meetings as rudeness, so it was usually easier to just say nothing. Priestess Fyäccheira turned her attention to some stacked papers on the desk, and Setsiana quietly slipped out the door. At least that was one unpleasant task done with for another month. She could only desperately hope that it would go better next time. She was starting to despair that the paper would ever be published.

And oof, poor Setsiana, that sounds like a rough time indeed. I love the sources you're citing, btw! Sounds like a lot of (possibly fascinating?) reading and worldbuilding.

Thank you for reading and commenting, too! It was actually
theseatheseatheopensea who told me about this community and recommend that I post to it, and the concept seemed pretty neat, and it's really nice to have a couple people commenting.
Some of the sources are just names, others will reappear in more detail (or the content of what they wrote is at least implied at some point).

Thank you! It's finally built up to where I can post what I consider the "actual" start of the story next time.
