Vert #18
Name: shadowsong26
Story: Until Next Time
'Verse: Lux
Colors: Vert #18. Light in the Darkness
Supplies and Materials: graffiti (Lilith Faire Day Five: Village Stage), chiaroscuro, brush (dearth), acrylics, yarn, novelty beads ("you take me in/no questions asked/you strip away the ugliness/that surrounds me." Sweet Surrender, Sarah McLachlan)
Word Count: 350
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Simon, Guardian Sanchez
Warnings: Discussion of memory erasure/trauma.
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always.
He taps on the door to his Guardian's office, waits a moment to be invited in.
It's taken him several days to get to this point, and he's grateful. As always. For the time and space to let his memories settle, and come out of the worst of the horror of them flooding back.
No matter how gently he tries to remind himself, the first few days are always hell.
But he's past the worst of it now; the nightmares crawling at the back of his mind have quieted to a dull roar, and he feels almost like a person again.
He's become fond of Guardian Sanchez--of Alejandro, at least. He's kind and clever and reads him quickly, seeing the truth in his eyes. "...you're leaving?" he asks.
He nods. "I came to say goodbye." He always does. It's polite, after all. Whatever else he is, however loud the horrors in his mind, he tries to be polite to the people around him.
"You're welcome to stay, you know."
"I know," he says, and manages a faint smile. "But."
"But," Alejandro agrees, and offers him a hand. "You know we're here for you. Always."
"Yes," he says, and takes it. The grip is warm and firm, grounding; for a minute, he considers taking Alejandro up on his offer.
But the moment passes.
"Good luck," Alejandro says. "We'll see you."
He nods. "Goodbye," he says. "Until next time. Thank you."
And there will be a next time. Michaela will find him again, and he'll wake again, and go through all of this again.
It is nice, though, he thinks, as he shuts the office door, to have a sanctuary. To not be so alone when I wake.
It made it easier to remember that a part of him, at least, was still human, underneath the blood and the horror and the centuries of forgetting and remembering and watching the world move on around him.
Maybe it will still be Alejandro waiting for him, the next time he claws his way through Michaela's oblivion.
He thinks that might be nice.
