"You miss her."
"Not like that, babe. Not in a--The One That Got Away, if she wanted me back I'd leave you for her kind of way."
"No, no, that's not what I was asking. I trust you, I wouldn't be here if I didn't. It's just...you just don't talk about your other exes the way you talk about her."
"...oh. No, I guess I don't."
"What happened?"
"It's not so much that something happened, just...we wanted different things, things we couldn't compromise on."
"Kids?"
"No, we were both a solid 'maybe someday, when our careers are at the right spot' on that. But she'd been offered her dream job in space, so of course I couldn't ask her to stay, but I couldn't follow her, either. You know how I feel about leaving the planet even for a vacation, let alone..."
"Yeah, I do. So, if she hadn't left?"
"Maybe we would've broken up eventually anyway? Like I said, we wanted different things, and there's a chance something else would've come up that was just as big a deal. ...I don't know. It wasn't--she wasn't my first girlfriend, but she was my first real grown-up relationship, and we were together for six years, so when it ended--it wasn't angry or anything, when we split, but it was...there was something a little hollow about it, you know?"
"I think I get what you mean."
"But I'm not that person anymore, anyway, not the woman who dated her or the woman she left behind. And I doubt she's the same person she was, either. She's not the one that got away, I don't want to go back to her. I'm happy here, with you, with the life that we're building together."
"But you miss her, and sometimes you wonder what if?"
"...does that bother you?"
"No. I trust you."
"...yeah. I guess sometimes I do."

No, I don't know much of anything about her, just that she exists. She's not anyone we've met before.
