Summary: Leion's left out in the cold.
"Wait here," said the elder of the two guards. He left the other three standing outside the gatehouse, while he disappeared inside it.
Leion paid little attention to the soldier. His gaze was fixed on Viyony. She was standing there in shirt and trousers, her arms folded in against herself; upright and silent.
"Viyony," he said, forcing himself to speak evenly. "You have to tell me how this happened."
She stared back, eyes large and dark, but though she opened her mouth slightly and he thought in premature relief that she was going to respond, she merely compressed her lips and refused to reply.
He clenched his jaw, but checked himself, before snapping out here. He moved forward, determined to get her to respond, but the other guard emerged from the gatehouse door. He had a superior officer with him this time, a lieutenant. Most likely Kettah knew them. She probably knew all three of them. Leion shook himself.
"Imai Valerno," said the lieutenant, on reaching them. "You may go if you wish—for now. You will need to be on hand to be questioned whenever we want you. However, we must detain Imai Eseray."
Viyony raised her chin.
"No, I cursed well can't go anywhere," said Leion. "I'm responsible for her. I'm -"
"You are not responsible for me!"
Leion rounded on Viyony. "Oh, so you can speak! Come on, what happened? How did that get there? You didn't take it—couldn't have done—at least." He stopped.
"Imai Valerno," the Lieutenant said, more quietly. "Leave this to us."
Leion ignored him, moving closer to Viyony. She looked down.
"This is a mistake," said Leion. He tried to calm down—his mind was racing, thoughts too erratic for reason. Viyony could not have done this—but she had asked him to arrange this meeting, begged him to, even—he must inform Tana—he couldn't leave Viyony here—and then finally, the sum result of it all crystallised into an idea. He lifted his head. "Lieutenant, I have to tell you that this is a test, arranged by Imai Veldiner. Of course, you'll have to confirm that with her—I don't suppose she'd consider it a success if you didn't, but in the meantime you can treat Imai Eseray with care."
The lieutenant frowned. "Imai Valerno -"
"I'm serious. Send for Imai Veldiner, or Imor Ufferden. You know I work for them. They won't be amused to hear you've arrested Viyony."
"Imai Veldiner will have to vouch for this before I can release her." The Lieutenant didn't sound convinced. Leion couldn't blame him. It wasn't much of a story, but Tana would back him up.
Leion turned towards Viyony again. She glared, mutinous at his interference, but still she said nothing.
"Quite," said Leion. "I'll wait for her, too. Surely it's better that way? I might be Imai Eseray's partner in crime, for all you know." When the guard ignored him, he stepped nearer to Viyony, close enough to speak more quietly. "Come on. Tell me what this is—did someone force you to it?"
"No," said Viyony. "I wish you'd go away."
Did you use me? he wanted to ask, but he wasn't going to do it out here in the cold courtyard with three members of the High Guards listening. He could have shaken her. Talking of which - "Will one of you please give Imai Eseray her coat back?"
The lieutenant nodded to the youngest guard, who handed both coat and jacket to Viyony. She clutched them tightly to her chest, and wouldn't look at Leion.
"Send word to Tana," said Leion. "That's all."
It was by no means all. The lieutenant and the younger, female guard, marched Viyony away to the Guard House, and Leion followed. He said little, busy thinking, and watching Viyony. Everything felt out of kilter. His first instinct about all of this was still: impossible. Viyony wouldn't do this. What good would it do to Eseray, and what else mattered to her? Then hurt crept in, catching in his lungs, making it hard to breathe. Had she used him to get to the High Governor? Thrown in an unnecessary eighth-day observance up at the beacon for good measure? Heat rose in his face at memories of Atino. Was he just as much a fool for a pretty face now as then?
That brought him back to the start: impossible. Atino got a kick out of having power over people. Viyony was direct to a fault when she wanted something. She asked outright—she even made her personal life into a business deal.
So why would she not defend herself?
Once they reached the Guard House, they locked her up in a cell and left Leion sitting in the area outside it under observation. He lounged about on an uncomfortable wooden chair, attempting to look nonchalant, but the guard at the door wasn't even paying any attention.
Leion stood and crossed to the door. It was solid, but there was a barred grilled by his head. He leaned close against it. "Viyony, this is stupid. Talk to me. I'll help you, whatever you've done. Just tell me!"
Viyony, on the other side, said nothing.
