In the heart of the capital stands the great tower. As the sun moves across the sky, it throws its shadow on the outer buildings of the palace; the chambers of the administrators, advisors, treasurers, and generals of the empire, whose work keeps the wheels of the great chariot moving.
The courtyard before the tower is empty between the ceremonies performed in the temple at its summit. It is a long climb to the top, and the steps cannot take without being seen.
Standing at its foot, looking up, an ordinary man might as well be gazing at the moon.
