opal jasper, #5: poem 1

Summary: Imagine it was Gorgo's poetry that survived the ages, rather than Sappho's, exhibit one.
We do not say farewell to our enemy,
Although we do gladly say farewell to a friend,
For no enemy deserves the opportunity
To travel with our blessings of their end,
When we cannot simultaneously stand by our family,
The one marked by blood and the one by hospitality
And must content ourselves with believing in
Their ability always to keep to the winding way
That leads to the welcoming doorstep of our kin,
Before night enrobes them too heavily
And they find that they cannot delay
The good fortune of our common enemy
Whom we did not even bid, "fare thee well."
