no_true_pair's March 2024 mini-round, for March 30th's prompt: "2 [Viyony Eseray] & 3 [Isiyan Eseray] - titled "In the Dark."
Summary:
It was too cold to be in the moon gallery at this time of night. Viyony pulled the blanket in more tightly around her as she crossed the room. She opened the top half of the long shutter and leant on the lower section. She'd hoped for starlight or moonlight to ease her mood, but the night was clouded and blank, revealing nothing.
She heard a soft movement behind her and closed her eyes, not needing to turn and look to know who had come after her.
"You'll catch a chill," said Mother. She moved across, however, and joined Viyony at the open shutter, looking out into the darkness.
Viyony swallowed. "I won't be here long."
"You're trying to avoid the dreams again, aren't you?"
Viyony put a hand to her head, rubbing it against a growing headache. "You don't understand what it's like."
"No," said Isiyan, "but you need your sleep, lovebird. You've a long journey ahead of you." She pulled the shutter closed and bolted it, and then put her arms around Viyony. "Come on. Do what you will, but not out here, not in this weather."
It was colder still in Viyony's dreams of the future—the one where Eseray was saved because she trapped herself in the silent misery of a loveless marriage. At this hour, pride and courage were in short supply. She surrendered enough to lay her head against Mother's shoulder, biting back tears. She would come home after Portcallan, but nothing would be the same, not for her. The dreams didn't tell her how that would play out. They only left behind them echoes of emotions to come. The future remained as inscrutable as the starless night above.
Mother stroked her hair, as she'd used to do when Viyony was little. Viyony stared out unseeing into the blackness, and remembered once upon a time when she hadn't known what it was to dream true, and Mother could ease all her fears by such simple means. It seemed so long ago, so far away.
